Understanding FBX and RDS file formats

FBX (Filmbox) is a popular 3D file format developed by Autodesk, widely used for exchanging 3D assets between various modeling, animation, and game development software. It supports complex geometry, textures, animations, and scene information.

RDS (Ray Dream Studio) is a proprietary 3D model file format associated with the now-discontinued Ray Dream Studio software. RDS files store 3D models, materials, and scene data, primarily for use within Ray Dream Studio and compatible legacy applications.

How to convert FBX to RDS

Direct conversion from FBX to RDS is challenging due to the discontinued status of Ray Dream Studio and limited support for the RDS format in modern software. However, you can use a two-step process:

1. Convert FBX to a more widely supported intermediate format (such as OBJ or 3DS) using a 3D modeling tool.
2. Import the intermediate file into Ray Dream Studio (if available) or a compatible legacy application, then save or export as RDS.

Recommended software for conversion

• Autodesk 3ds Max: Import FBX, then export as OBJ or 3DS (File → Export → Export Selected).
• Blender: Import FBX, then export as OBJ (File → Import → FBX, then File → Export → Wavefront (.obj)).
• Ray Dream Studio (if available): Import OBJ or 3DS, then save as RDS (File → Import, then File → Save As).

Note: Since Ray Dream Studio is discontinued, you may need to use an old version or seek out legacy software capable of handling RDS files.

Tips for successful conversion

• Check for geometry or material compatibility when exporting to intermediate formats.
• Some features (like advanced animations or shaders) may not transfer perfectly between formats.
