What the FBX format is

FBX is an Autodesk format for exchanging 3D models, meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, animation data, and sometimes scene hierarchy. It is commonly created or exported by Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, MotionBuilder, Blender, Cinema 4D, Unity, and Unreal Engine pipelines. You encounter it when moving an animated character, architectural model, game asset, or product visualization between 3D applications.

An FBX file is not converted into equivalent WEBP 3D data. WEBP cannot store polygon meshes, bones, animation, cameras, or editable materials, so the scene must first be imported and rendered from a selected viewpoint.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format suited to web previews and thumbnails. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and smaller files than comparable JPEG or PNG images at many quality settings.

Use WEBP when the recipient needs a static image rather than an interactive model. It is suitable for product previews, rendered turntable frames, documentation, portfolios, and image galleries. It is not suitable when users need to rotate the model, inspect geometry, preserve animation, or edit the original scene.

How to convert FBX to WEBP

Blender provides a practical desktop workflow and can import FBX files without changing the source file.

1. Open Blender and select File → Import → FBX (.fbx).
2. Choose the FBX file and click Import FBX. Check the imported scale, orientation, materials, and textures in the viewport.
3. Position a camera. If the FBX contains a camera, select it through the scene hierarchy or use View → Align View → Align Active Camera to View after arranging the viewport.
4. Add or adjust lighting. An imported scene may appear black if it depends on lights or environment settings that were not included in the FBX. An area light, a sun light, or an HDRI environment can provide more predictable illumination.
5. Set the output dimensions in Output Properties → Format. Choose a resolution such as 1200 × 1200 for a square product preview and select RGBA if transparency is required.
6. Render the view with Render → Render Image.
7. In the Image Editor, choose Image → Save As, set the filename extension to .webp, select WebP as the file format, choose the required quality and lossless options, then click Save As Image.

For repeated conversions, Blender can render from the command line after a scene has been configured:

blender -b scene.blend -o //render/frame -F WEBP -f 1

The command renders frame 1 using the active camera and saves the output according to the configured resolution, color mode, and WEBP settings. To use an FBX directly in an automated process, create a Blender Python script that imports the file, establishes a camera and lights, sets scene.render.image_settings.file_format = 'WEBP', and calls bpy.ops.render.render(write_still=True).

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Rendering quality depends primarily on the camera, lighting, materials, texture paths, and render engine rather than on WEBP itself. FBX texture references may be relative paths or external files; keep the referenced texture folder available when importing, or the rendered model may have missing colors and materials.

Use lossy WEBP for small web thumbnails and adjust the quality slider until edges and fine textures remain acceptable. Use lossless WEBP when crisp text, hard surface details, or transparency edges must be preserved. Some older image tools and document systems do not accept WEBP, so PNG is a safer fallback for maximum compatibility.

A single WEBP represents only one rendered frame. To show animation, render multiple frames or use a video format; to preserve an editable 3D asset, deliver the FBX or another 3D format alongside its textures.
