PLY files store 3D geometry, while WEBP stores 2D raster images, so this conversion is used to create a browser-ready preview, thumbnail, or shareable snapshot of a model. The PLY must be rendered from a chosen camera angle; converting it does not preserve the mesh as an interactive 3D object.

What the PLY format is

PLY, or Polygon File Format, stores 3D points and polygon faces, commonly with vertex colors, normals, texture coordinates, and other per-vertex properties. It is used for scanned objects, point clouds, photogrammetry output, polygon meshes, and research datasets.

3D scanners and photogrammetry applications commonly create PLY files. Blender, MeshLab, CloudCompare, Meshroom, and various CAD or scientific-visualization tools can import or export them. PLY is often encountered when a scan or reconstruction needs cleaning, inspection, retopology, or conversion to another 3D format.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a 2D image format designed for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and RGB or RGBA color, making it suitable for model previews, catalog images, web galleries, documentation, and thumbnails.

A WEBP file contains pixels rather than vertices, faces, materials, or animation data. It is usually smaller than an equivalent PNG or JPEG at similar visual quality, but it cannot be opened as a 3D model or used to recover the original PLY geometry.

How to actually convert PLY to WEBP

Using 101convert.com

For a quick conversion without installing software, use the free converter on 101convert.com:

  1. Open the PLY-to-WEBP conversion page on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .ply file.
  3. Select WEBP as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting image and check that the model orientation, visible colors, and framing are suitable.

Because PLY files usually do not define a preferred camera, lighting setup, or background, the rendered view may require adjustment in a 3D application for a predictable result.

Using Blender for controlled rendering

  1. Open Blender and choose File → Import → Stanford PLY (.ply).
  2. Inspect the imported mesh in the 3D viewport. Rotate or scale it if necessary, then add a camera with Add → Camera.
  3. Position the camera and add lights. PLY vertex colors may appear automatically, but files without color or material data need a material assigned in the Material Properties panel.
  4. Set the image dimensions under Output Properties. Enable transparent film only if the WEBP should have an alpha channel.
  5. Render with F12 and save the result as render.png using Image → Save As.
  6. Convert the rendered image with ImageMagick:

magick render.png -quality 85 model.webp

For a lossless WEBP, use:

magick render.png -define webp:lossless=true model.webp

Some Blender versions or builds expose WEBP directly in the output or image-save format list. If WEBP is available, select it there; otherwise, rendering to PNG and encoding with ImageMagick avoids dependence on Blender's compiled image-format support.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion is a rendering operation, not a geometry-preserving format conversion. Camera angle, lighting, shadows, material assignment, resolution, and background determine the WEBP result, while the original polygon structure is discarded.

Use lossy quality around 80–90 for ordinary previews. Use lossless WEBP when the image contains sharp wireframes, labels, UI elements, or flat color boundaries. Transparency requires an RGBA render and a WEBP encoder that preserves alpha.

WEBP support is common in current browsers and image applications, but older desktop software and some publishing pipelines may require PNG or JPEG instead. Keep the original PLY separately when the mesh, vertex data, or future 3D editing may be needed.
