What the USDZ format is

USDZ is a packaged, usually uncompressed distribution format based on Pixar's Universal Scene Description (USD). It can contain meshes, transforms, cameras, lights, materials, textures, animation data, and scene relationships in a single file.

Apple uses USDZ for AR Quick Look on iPhone, iPad, and macOS. 3D applications such as Autodesk Maya, Cinema 4D, Houdini, Reality Composer, Reality Composer Pro, and Blender can create or export USD or USDZ files. You may encounter USDZ files when downloading AR product models, exchanging assets for Apple platforms, or exporting scenes from a 3D workflow.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a 2D image format intended primarily for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, RGB and RGBA color, and transparency, so it can produce smaller previews than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality.

Use WEBP when the recipient needs a browser-compatible image rather than a 3D asset. A rendered WEBP can show one camera angle of the USDZ scene, but it cannot be rotated, opened as an AR object, or edited as a 3D model.

How to convert USDZ to WEBP

1. Open the USDZ-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the .usdz file and select WEBP as the output format.
3. Start the conversion and download the generated .webp image.

The resulting image is normally generated from the model's available scene data. If the source contains several objects, cameras, or animation frames, check which view the converter uses before treating the output as the definitive product image.

Render a controlled image in Blender

1. Install a Blender version with USD import support and open a new scene.
2. Choose File → Import → Universal Scene Description and select the USDZ file. If the importer does not list USDZ directly, extract the package only when the application or workflow explicitly supports its contents; do not rename the extension as a substitute for conversion.
3. Position a camera, add or adjust lighting, and inspect the imported materials and textures. Set the render resolution in Output Properties → Format.
4. Set the output file format to WebP, choose lossy or lossless compression, and set the quality value when using lossy output.
5. Render with Render → Render Image, then use Image → Save As and save the result with a .webp extension.

Blender is preferable when the camera angle, background, resolution, lighting, transparency, or image quality must be controlled. For a transparent product cutout, enable an RGBA-capable render and use a transparent film/background setting before saving the WebP.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

USDZ-to-WEBP conversion is a 3D render-to-2D image operation, not a direct format translation. A USDZ file may contain animation, multiple views, physically based materials, or textures that cannot be represented by one still image.

Imported appearance can differ from Apple Quick Look or the application that created the file because USD material support, shader features, lighting, and texture color management vary between programs. Verify external texture references and embedded assets if the render appears gray, untextured, or incorrectly lit.

Choose lossless WebP for diagrams, sharp edges, text, or repeated editing. Choose lossy WebP for ordinary previews and adjust quality while checking fine geometry and transparent edges. Use a sufficiently large render resolution because enlarging a small WebP cannot restore model detail.
