What the FCStd format is

FCStd is the native document format of FreeCAD, an open-source parametric 3D CAD application. It can contain bodies, parts, sketches, constraints, features, assemblies, placements, materials, and the dependency history used to regenerate a model. FreeCAD creates FCStd files when you save a document through File → Save or File → Save as.

An FCStd document is not an image. Its geometry remains editable in FreeCAD, and the file can contain several objects and views that cannot be represented by a single WEBP image.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format intended mainly for web pages, previews, thumbnails, and documentation. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and RGB or RGBA images.

WEBP usually produces smaller files than PNG at comparable visual quality, but it stores only the rendered pixels. It does not retain CAD dimensions, sketches, feature history, selectable faces, 3D camera data, or editable solids.

How to convert FCStd to WEBP

Using FreeCAD and ImageMagick

1. Open the .FCStd file in FreeCAD.
2. Activate the document and select the desired workbench or model view. Hide construction geometry and objects that should not appear in the image.
3. Set the camera orientation, display mode, background, and perspective. Use View → Standard views for a known orientation, then use View → Fit all to frame the model.
4. Export the view as a PNG through View → Save image.... Choose a sufficiently large canvas, such as 1600 × 1200 pixels, and save it as model.png.
5. Convert the rendered image with ImageMagick:

magick model.png -quality 85 model.webp

The -quality 85 setting creates a lossy WEBP. For pixel-preserving output, use:

magick model.png -define webp:lossless=true model.webp

If FreeCAD's image dialog offers WEBP directly, select WEBP as the output format and set the pixel dimensions and quality there. Exporting PNG first is more compatible because WEBP support depends on the image libraries included with the FreeCAD build.

Using the FreeCAD Python console

For repeatable renders, open the target document in FreeCAD, enable View → Panels → Python console, and run:

Then run the ImageMagick command above. Replace White with Transparent when the FreeCAD version and chosen image format support an alpha background. The Python-console method captures the active 3D view, including its current camera and visible objects.

Converting without installing software

You can use the conversion tool on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Because FCStd is a structured 3D document and WEBP is a 2D image, check the resulting preview and select the required view, resolution, background, and compression settings if the converter provides them.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• A WEBP conversion is a screenshot or render, not a 3D export. Use formats such as STEP, IGES, STL, or OBJ when the recipient needs model geometry rather than an image.
• Lossy WEBP can blur thin edges, dimension labels, and high-contrast CAD linework. Use lossless WEBP or a higher quality value for technical illustrations.
• Increase the FreeCAD render dimensions before conversion; enlarging a small WEBP afterward cannot restore missing edge detail.
• Transparent backgrounds require an alpha-capable export path and a WEBP viewer that supports transparency. A solid background is safer for older documentation and image software.
• WEBP support is common in current browsers and graphics applications, but some CAD, publishing, and office programs still accept PNG or JPEG more reliably. Keep the PNG render when compatibility or archival reproducibility matters.
