People convert an FCStd model to JPG when they need a viewable image for documentation, email, websites, presentations, or software that cannot open FreeCAD documents. The conversion creates a 2D picture of the model rather than a portable 3D model.

What the FCSTD format is

FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format. FreeCAD creates it for parametric 3D models containing solids, sketches, features, constraints, assemblies, view settings, and other document data. You typically encounter FCStd files when receiving a FreeCAD design, opening a mechanical part or enclosure model, or exchanging editable CAD work with another FreeCAD user.

An FCStd file is not an image. Its dimensions, feature history, and editable geometry cannot be preserved inside a JPG.

What the JPG format is

JPG is a raster image format suited to rendered model views, thumbnails, reports, web pages, and general image viewers. It is widely supported and usually produces much smaller files than lossless image formats.

JPG stores pixels, not sketches, faces, measurements, object trees, or 3D coordinates. It also uses lossy compression and does not preserve transparent backgrounds reliably; use PNG when transparency, sharp linework, or lossless output matters.

How to convert FCSTD to JPG

Using FreeCAD's interface

  1. Open the .FCStd file in FreeCAD.
  2. Select the required object in the tree and hide unwanted objects with the spacebar.
  3. Choose a view such as View → Standard views → Axonometric, then use View → Fit all to frame the model.
  4. Set the display mode, background, and object visibility as needed.
  5. Use View → Save image or the equivalent screenshot/image command in your FreeCAD version.
  6. Enter a filename ending in .jpg, choose the output dimensions, and confirm the export.

The exact menu label can vary between FreeCAD releases. If the image command offers a format selector, select JPEG and set the image width and height before saving.

Using the FreeCAD Python console

For repeatable exports, open the Python console through View → Panels → Python console, then run commands like these after replacing the paths:

import FreeCAD as App
import FreeCADGui as Gui

doc = App.openDocument("/path/to/model.FCStd")
view = Gui.activeDocument().activeView()
view.viewAxonometric()
view.fitAll()
view.saveImage("/path/to/model.jpg", 1600, 1200, "Current", 1.0)

saveImage captures the active 3D view at the specified pixel dimensions. Exporting at 1600 × 1200 or higher generally gives more usable documentation than saving a small viewport screenshot. FreeCAD must have a graphical view available; this method is not a geometry conversion in headless command-line mode.

Using the built-in online converter

You can also convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the FCStd file, select JPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. This produces a rendered or preview image, not an editable CAD file; avoid uploading confidential designs to any online service.

Quality and compatibility limits

The JPG contains only the camera view that was exported. Hidden parts, alternate views, object metadata, dimensions, materials, and FreeCAD feature history are not included. Set the camera orientation and visibility before exporting, and use a larger pixel size when the image will be printed or cropped.

JPG compression can create halos around edges and reduce the readability of thin lines, labels, and dimension annotations. Use high quality when available, or export PNG from FreeCAD and convert to JPG afterward only when JPG compatibility is required.
