Free online FCSTD to GIF converter

FreeCAD stores editable 3D models in FCSTD documents, but browsers, chat apps, and documentation systems often accept only image files. Converting the visible model to GIF creates a shareable raster image, not an editable CAD document.

What the FCSTD format is

.FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format. It stores a model's parametric objects, sketches, constraints, Part and Part Design features, assemblies or bodies, materials, views, and document metadata. FreeCAD creates FCSTD files when you save a project with File → Save or File → Save As.

An FCSTD file contains 3D geometry and construction data rather than a ready-made 2D picture. The file normally must be opened in FreeCAD before its model can be rendered into an image.

What the GIF format is

.GIF is a raster image format suited to simple diagrams, thumbnails, screenshots, and short animations. It is widely supported by web browsers and older documentation or messaging systems.

GIF uses an indexed palette of at most 256 colors per frame. It can preserve hard-edged linework and flat shading effectively, but gradients, realistic materials, shadows, and anti-aliased edges may show banding or color loss. A normal FCSTD-to-GIF conversion produces one static frame; an animated GIF requires several separately rendered views or frames.

How to actually convert FCSTD to GIF

Using FreeCAD and ImageMagick

1. Open the FCSTD file in FreeCAD.
2. Set the required camera orientation, zoom, display mode, background, and object visibility. Fit the model with View → Standard views → Axonometric, then use View → Fit all if needed.
3. Export the visible view to a lossless intermediate image with View → Save image.... Choose PNG, for example model.png, and select a sufficiently large width and height.
4. Convert the PNG to GIF with ImageMagick:

magick model.png -colors 256 model.gif

For a smaller web image, resize before palette conversion:

magick model.png -resize 800x800 -colors 256 model.gif

Keep PNG as the intermediate format because converting directly from a rendered view to GIF can discard color information before palette optimization. If the PNG has transparency, use -background and -alpha remove when a solid GIF background is required:

magick model.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -colors 256 model.gif

Using the FreeCAD Python console

FreeCAD can render the current view without using the export dialog. Open View → Panels → Python console, then run:

Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.png", 1600, 1200, "Current", 1.0)

Run the ImageMagick command afterward to create model.gif. The command captures the current camera and visible scene; it does not automatically export every object or generate animation frames.

Using the built-in online converter

You can upload the FCSTD file to the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Check the resulting image carefully because CAD rendering options such as camera angle, hidden objects, background, and image dimensions may not match the view you would configure in FreeCAD.

Quality and compatibility limitations

GIF cannot contain editable 3D geometry, sketches, constraints, or FreeCAD feature history. Keep the original FCSTD file when recipients need to inspect or modify the model.

For technical drawings, wireframes, or models with smooth shading, PNG usually gives better results because it supports full-color pixels and avoids GIF's 256-color limit. Use GIF when broad compatibility, a small static preview, or animation is more important than rendering fidelity.

FreeCAD's exported image reflects only the active viewport. Hidden bodies, clipped geometry, alternate camera positions, and unsupported render effects will not appear unless they are enabled before export. To make an animated GIF, export a numbered sequence such as frame-001.png, frame-002.png, then run:

magick -delay 8 -loop 0 frame-*.png animation.gif

Use identical image dimensions and camera framing for every frame; otherwise the animation will jump between views.
