What the FCSTD format is

.FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format. It stores parametric 3D models, sketches, bodies, parts, assemblies, constraints, feature history, materials, and document metadata created in FreeCAD. FCStd files are edited in FreeCAD; they are not normally readable by PDF viewers or general-purpose document software.

An FCStd document can contain one or more 3D objects, but a PDF is normally a 2D representation. Producing a useful PDF therefore requires selecting a view, creating a TechDraw page, or exporting an image of the model rather than simply changing the filename extension.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format suitable for printing, technical documentation, review, and long-term sharing. It can contain vector lines, text, dimensions, hatching, raster images, hyperlinks, and multiple drawing pages. A PDF normally does not preserve FreeCAD's editable feature tree, sketches, constraints, parametric relationships, or 3D modeling history.

For engineering drawings, a TechDraw-generated PDF is preferable to a screenshot because projected edges, dimensions, annotations, and page geometry remain sharp when printed or zoomed.

How to convert FCSTD to PDF

Using FreeCAD TechDraw

1. Open the file in FreeCAD with File → Open and select model.FCStd.
2. Switch to the TechDraw workbench.
3. Create a drawing page with TechDraw → Insert Default Page, or choose a custom SVG template for a required paper size and title block.
4. Select the body, part, or object to document, then insert a view with TechDraw → Insert View. Set the camera direction, scale, line visibility, and display mode in the view properties.
5. Add projected views, section views, dimensions, center lines, and annotations as required. Recompute the document with F5 if the page does not update.
6. Select the TechDraw page and use the TechDraw command for exporting the page as PDF, or use the corresponding File → Export command when available in the installed FreeCAD version. Save the result as model.pdf.

For a quick visual handoff rather than a dimensioned drawing, orient the model in the 3D view, choose View → Standard views or a custom camera angle, and export the visible view as an image before placing it in a document that can be saved as PDF. TechDraw is the better choice for manufacturing or engineering documentation.

• PDF export represents selected views, not the complete editable 3D model. Send the original .FCStd file as well when recipients need to inspect or modify the design.
• Check fonts, line widths, hidden-line settings, dimension placement, and page orientation in a PDF viewer and in a printed proof. These settings affect readability even when the underlying geometry is correct.
• FreeCAD versions can differ in TechDraw commands and template behavior. If a menu item is absent, select the page in the model tree and use the TechDraw toolbar or context menu.
