Recipients often need a printable, viewable document rather than a Parasolid model, especially for quotations, approvals, manufacturing records, or archiving. Converting the CAD data to PDF creates a fixed-layout drawing or rendered view, not an editable parametric model.
What the X_T format is
X_T is the text-based Parasolid modeling format developed by Siemens. It stores precise 3D solid, surface, assembly, and geometric data and is exchanged between mechanical CAD systems that support the Parasolid kernel. Siemens NX, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Onshape, and other CAD applications can create or import X_T files.
An X_T file may come from a supplier, manufacturing partner, or engineering department even when the receiving organization uses different native CAD software. The related .x_b format stores Parasolid data in binary form; changing the extension does not convert between X_T and X_B.
What the PDF format is
PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed for viewing, printing, email distribution, approval, and controlled records. A CAD-generated PDF can contain dimensioned drawing sheets, title blocks, annotations, vector linework, shaded views, and section views.
PDF normally preserves the presentation of the design rather than its parametric features, constraints, assembly relationships, editable dimensions, or original Parasolid topology. Some software can create a 3D PDF containing an interactive model, but support for embedded 3D content varies among PDF viewers.
How to convert an X_T file
Using Siemens Solid Edge
- Open Solid Edge and select File → Open, then choose the
.x_tfile. Review the import options, units, body count, and model orientation. - Measure a known dimension and inspect the model for missing faces, defective bodies, or incorrect scale.
- Create a Draft document and place the imported part or assembly on a drawing sheet. Add orthographic, isometric, section, or detail views as required.
- Set the sheet size, scale, projection method, line display, shading, dimensions, notes, tolerances, material information, revision, and title block.
- Publish the sheet with File → Save As or File → Export → PDF. Menu names vary by Solid Edge release; select all required sheets and enable vector output when available.
Using Siemens NX or SolidWorks
- Open the X_T file with File → Open and check the import report, units, body count, orientation, and assembly structure.
- Create a drawing from the imported model, then add the required views, dimensions, annotations, and title-block information.
- Use the application’s PDF publishing command, commonly located under File → Export or File → Save As. Select the drawing sheets, paper size, scale, and vector or raster settings.
This drawing-based workflow is preferable when the PDF will support manufacturing, inspection, purchasing, or formal approval. Solid Edge, NX, and SolidWorks menu names and licensing requirements differ by release.
Using CrossManager for automated output
Datakit CrossManager can read many Parasolid X_T files and is intended for batch CAD conversion. Select X_T as the input format, add the files, choose the available PDF or 3D PDF output, configure the model view or tessellation settings, and run the conversion. This can produce a rendered or interactive model document, but it generally does not create a fully dimensioned engineering drawing with title blocks and manufacturing annotations.
Use a CAD application instead when the output needs drawing views, exact annotations, tolerances, or controlled sheet layouts. Confirm that the installed CrossManager version and license expose PDF output; supported formats and options vary by release.
Using an online converter
CAD Exchanger Cloud is an option for non-confidential files. Upload the X_T file, verify that the current service accepts Parasolid input, choose PDF if it is listed as an available output, and inspect the result before sharing it. Online format lists and export capabilities can change, so do not assume that a viewer’s ability to display X_T also means it can generate PDF.
Online conversion sends the source model to a third-party service. Do not upload proprietary designs, export-controlled data, or customer files unless the service’s processing, retention, deletion, and access terms satisfy the applicable requirements.
Quality and compatibility limits
- PDF is not a format-preserving CAD conversion. Parametric features, constraints, editable model dimensions, assembly mates, and exact feature history are generally unavailable in the result.
- Verify units by measuring a known feature after import. The receiving application’s import settings can interpret or scale the model differently from the authoring system.
- Hidden bodies, suppressed components, section cuts, display states, layer visibility, and assembly configurations affect the published result. Review every sheet and view at 100% before distribution.
- Use vector PDF output for line drawings so edges and dimensions remain sharp when printed. Shaded or photographic views may be rasterized; increase rendering resolution when the output will be enlarged.
- For engineering records, include explicit units, scale, projection method, tolerances, material information, revision data, and drawing status instead of exporting only a screenshot.
- 3D PDF files may display as ordinary pages, or their embedded model may be unavailable, in browser-based and some mobile PDF viewers. Test the file in the viewer used by its recipients.
- Keep the original X_T file and the source CAD version with the PDF when future editing or geometry recovery may be required. A PDF alone is not a reliable substitute for the source model.
