FCStd files contain editable FreeCAD 3D models, while TIF files contain 2D raster images. Convert the model when a document, publication, image editor, or archive requires a rendered view rather than an editable CAD file.

What the FCStd format is

.FCStd is FreeCAD's native document format. It can store parametric solids, sketches, meshes, assemblies, constraints, feature history, materials, and document metadata. FreeCAD creates and opens FCStd files; the format is commonly encountered when sharing models made in FreeCAD or when a downstream application does not support native FreeCAD documents.

What the TIF format is

.TIF or .TIFF is a raster image format used for high-resolution technical illustrations, print workflows, scanning, and archival images. TIFF supports lossless compression and high color depth, but it cannot retain 3D geometry, parametric history, sketches, or editable model features. The result is an image of one selected view of the model.

How to convert FCStd to TIF

Using FreeCAD

  1. Open the FCStd file in FreeCAD.
  2. Select the required objects in the Model tree and hide construction geometry or objects that should not appear.
  3. Set the desired camera orientation, display mode, background, and lighting. Use View → Standard views and View → Fit all where appropriate.
  4. Use View → Save image... if the installed FreeCAD build offers TIFF as an output format, then choose model.tif, set the image dimensions, and save.

For a repeatable render, open FreeCAD's Python console and run:

Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.tif", 2400, 1800, "Current", True)

The command saves the current 3D view at 2400 × 1800 pixels with antialiasing. TIFF support depends on the Qt image plugins included with the FreeCAD installation. If the command cannot write TIFF, save a PNG instead:

Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.png", 2400, 1800, "Current", True)

Then convert the raster image with ImageMagick:

magick model.png -compress LZW model.tif

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the FCStd file, select TIF as the output, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Since the output is a rendered raster, check the selected view and privacy requirements before uploading a design.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion captures the active viewport, not every possible camera angle or the full model structure. Set the output pixel dimensions before rendering; increasing a small TIFF afterward does not recover geometric detail. For print use, render at the required physical size and resolution, such as 300 pixels per inch, and verify the resulting pixel dimensions in the target application.

Hidden objects, display modes, clipping planes, transparency, shadows, and background settings affect the image. TIFF compression such as LZW is lossless, but some applications have limited support for alpha channels, 16-bit color, tiled TIFFs, or multi-page TIFFs; use a standard RGB TIFF when compatibility is more important than advanced image features.
