SKP files contain editable SketchUp scenes, but many publishing, CAD documentation, and image-archiving workflows require a flat raster image. Exporting the model view as TIF preserves a high-resolution representation for printing or post-processing, rather than delivering the 3D model itself.

What the SKP format is

SKP is the native project format of SketchUp, used for architectural models, interiors, products, landscapes, and other 3D scenes. It stores geometry, materials, components, scenes, styles, cameras, and model metadata. SketchUp Desktop creates and edits SKP files; SketchUp files are also commonly exchanged with LayOut, rendering tools, and 3D asset workflows.

An SKP file is a scene description, not a conventional 2D image. Its contents can include multiple viewpoints and editable faces, edges, groups, and components.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster image format used for print production, scans, technical documentation, and image archives. It supports high bit depth, lossless compression options, large image dimensions, and color information that is better suited to professional image workflows than heavily compressed JPEG output.

A TIF exported from SketchUp contains one rendered viewport image. It does not retain the SKP model's editable geometry, scenes, materials as separate objects, or 3D camera navigation.

How to convert SKP to TIF

Using SketchUp Desktop

  1. Open the model in SketchUp Desktop and select the scene, camera angle, projection, and display style to export.
  2. Adjust visible layers or tags, shadows, section cuts, backgrounds, and edge settings. Hide construction geometry that should not appear in the image.
  3. Choose File → Export → 2D Graphic.
  4. Set the file type to TIFF Image (*.tif) or TIFF Image (*.tiff), choose a destination, and select Export.
  5. Set the output width and height in the export options. Use the required pixel dimensions for the print or documentation workflow; do not rely on enlarging a small export later.

If the installed SketchUp edition or version does not offer TIFF in 2D Graphic export, export a lossless PNG at the required dimensions, then open it in an image editor such as GIMP or Photoshop and use Save As or Export to create .tif. This preserves the rendered pixels but cannot add detail that was absent from the PNG.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the SKP file, choose TIF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. For sensitive architectural or client files, use the desktop export method instead of uploading the model.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • The output resolution is determined by the export dimensions and the model's displayed view. A TIF does not create a higher-detail render than SketchUp generated.
  • Exported linework, shadows, textures, anti-aliasing, and background color follow the active scene and style settings. Inspect the image at 100% before printing.
  • Perspective and parallel projection produce different results; select the required camera mode before exporting.
  • Large dimensions can require substantial memory and may be limited by the SketchUp version, operating system, or graphics hardware.
  • TIF compression and color options vary by SketchUp version and by the application opening the file. If a receiving system rejects a compressed TIF, save an uncompressed TIFF in an image editor.
