A CAD viewer, document system, or archive may require a TIFF image instead of editable IGES geometry. Converting an IGS file to TIF therefore renders the model as a raster view; it does not preserve selectable surfaces, curves, or parametric CAD data.

What the IGS format is

IGS (usually .igs or .iges) is the file extension for IGES, a neutral CAD exchange format. It stores geometry such as wireframes, curves, surfaces, and sometimes solid-related entities for transferring designs between systems.

Mechanical CAD applications including CATIA, Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, and FreeCAD can create or import IGES files. You typically encounter IGS when receiving legacy engineering data, exchanging a model with a supplier, or opening a design created in a different CAD system.

What the TIF format is

TIF (TIFF, usually .tif or .tiff) is a raster image format. A TIF output from a 3D model is a rendered or captured view containing pixels, not the original CAD structure.

TIFF supports high resolution, lossless LZW or ZIP compression, multiple color modes, and metadata. It suits technical documentation, print production, archival images, and workflows that reject screenshots saved as JPEG or PNG.

How to convert IGS to TIF

Using FreeCAD and ImageMagick

  1. Install FreeCAD and open the file with File → Open, selecting the .igs or .iges file.
  2. Wait for the geometry to load, then use View → Standard views and View → Fit all to choose and frame the required view. Hide construction geometry or other objects that should not appear in the image.
  3. Use FreeCAD's image or screenshot command, commonly available under View → Save image, and save a large intermediate file such as model.png. Set the capture dimensions to the final pixel size or larger.
  4. Convert the image to TIFF with ImageMagick:

magick model.png -colorspace sRGB -compress LZW model.tif

For a white background and no transparency, use:

magick model.png -alpha remove -background white -colorspace sRGB -compress LZW model.tif

FreeCAD's exact screenshot menu name can vary by release. Any CAD application that can import IGES and export a raster image can replace FreeCAD; save the view as PNG first, then perform the TIFF conversion with the same command.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the IGS file, select TIF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. Because the result is rasterized, inspect the model orientation, background, and resolution before using it in documentation.

Quality and compatibility limitations

IGES does not contain a single mandatory camera view, so an IGS-to-TIF conversion must choose a viewpoint, display mode, background, and image dimensions. Different converters can therefore produce different images from the same source file.

Increase the output dimensions before conversion when the TIFF will be printed or placed in a zoomable document. A 300-DPI print at 10 inches wide needs approximately 3000 pixels across; increasing DPI metadata without increasing pixel dimensions does not add detail.

Use LZW or ZIP TIFF compression for lossless output. Curves, small holes, thin edges, and text may disappear at low resolution, while hidden geometry and editable CAD entities cannot be recovered from the TIF file. Keep the original IGS file alongside the TIFF when future editing or precise measurement is required.
