What the IFC format is
IFC, or Industry Foundation Classes, is an open BIM exchange format for building and infrastructure models. It stores objects such as walls, slabs, doors, windows, spaces, structural members, materials, properties, relationships, and sometimes geographic or project metadata.
Authoring applications including Autodesk Revit, Archicad, Allplan, Tekla Structures, and Vectorworks export IFC files. You typically encounter IFC when exchanging models between disciplines, reviewing a coordination model, or receiving project data from software that does not use the same native format.
What the TIF format is
TIF, also called TIFF, is a raster image format. It stores a fixed grid of pixels rather than walls, objects, coordinates, or BIM relationships.
TIFF is suited to rendered views, technical documentation, archival images, and material or texture maps. It supports high color depth and lossless LZW or ZIP compression, so it can preserve more image data than JPEG during editing. A TIF cannot retain the editable geometry or BIM metadata contained in an IFC file.
How to actually convert IFC to TIF
Render the IFC with Blender and Bonsai
- Install Blender and the Bonsai IFC add-on, formerly known as BlenderBIM, using versions that are compatible with each other.
- Open Blender and use the Bonsai IFC command to open or import the
project.ifcfile. - Check the imported model, hide unnecessary categories or levels, and choose the required view. IFC models may import at large real-world coordinates, so use the add-on's project or coordinate tools if the model appears far from the scene origin.
- Add a camera and lighting, or select an existing camera. Set the required pixel dimensions in the render properties; use a higher resolution for printed drawings.
- Render the view with
F12. In the image editor, choose Image → Save As, select TIFF/TIF, and save the rendered image asmodel.tif. - Choose RGB or RGBA as needed. Use 16-bit color when the image will undergo substantial tonal editing; use 8-bit color for ordinary documentation and smaller files. Select LZW or ZIP compression when available to reduce size without losing pixels.
Use the built-in online converter
You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the IFC, select TIF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting file. This option is appropriate when the service can generate the required view automatically; it may not provide the camera, category visibility, lighting, or resolution control available in a 3D application.
Quality and compatibility limitations
IFC-to-TIF conversion is a 2D rasterization, not a geometry-preserving conversion. The output contains only the selected viewpoint and visible appearance; it does not allow later orbiting, object selection, measurement, or BIM property inspection.
For line drawings, use an orthographic camera, a plain background, and high resolution. Perspective cameras and lighting produce presentation renders rather than dimensionally reliable plans or elevations. If exact vector lines are required, export the IFC view to PDF or SVG first and rasterize that output to TIFF.
Complex IFC files can import differently depending on the exporter and Bonsai version. Missing textures, unsupported materials, duplicated objects, incorrect units, and large-coordinate precision issues may require cleanup before rendering. Verify object visibility, scale, camera framing, and image dimensions before saving the final TIF.
