IFC files contain BIM geometry and metadata, but many viewers, reports, presentations, and document systems accept only raster images. Converting an IFC model to PNG produces a shareable snapshot rather than an editable 3D model.

What the IFC format is

IFC, usually stored with the .ifc extension, is an open BIM exchange format defined by buildingSMART. It stores coordinated building elements such as walls, slabs, doors, windows, spaces, structural members, materials, properties, relationships, and geometric representations.

Architectural, structural, and MEP applications including Autodesk Revit, Archicad, Tekla Structures, Allplan, and FreeCAD can create or export IFC files. You encounter IFC when exchanging a building model between different design applications, reviewing coordination models, or receiving BIM data from another project participant.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format that stores each view as pixels. It supports lossless compression and an alpha channel, so it is suitable for floor-plan screenshots, shaded 3D views, diagrams, and documentation where sharp edges and labels matter.

A PNG does not preserve IFC objects, measurements, layers, BIM properties, model relationships, or 3D navigation. It records only the selected camera view at the exported pixel dimensions.

How to convert IFC to PNG

Using the online converter

  1. Open the IFC-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .ifc file and choose PNG as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion, then download the generated image when processing finishes.

This method is useful when you need a quick preview and do not need to control the camera, rendering engine, object visibility, or image resolution. Large IFC files, complex materials, and models containing linked or external resources may render differently from a desktop BIM viewer.

Using Blender with the Bonsai IFC add-on

  1. Install Blender and the Bonsai add-on, formerly known as BlenderBIM. Use a version of Bonsai compatible with your Blender release.
  2. Open Blender and choose File → Import → IFC, then select the .ifc file. Wait for the geometry and model hierarchy to load.
  3. Use the viewport to select a plan, elevation, or perspective view. Hide unwanted categories or objects through the scene hierarchy, and apply a section or clipping view if required.
  4. Set the render engine, camera, lighting, materials, and output resolution. For a technical view, use an orthographic camera and enable transparent background only when a separate background is required.
  5. Open Output Properties → Output, set the file format to PNG, choose the color mode and resolution, then choose Render → Render Image.
  6. Save the result with Image → Save As and a filename such as building-view.png.

Blender is appropriate when the output must be a controlled rendered view. A dedicated IFC viewer can be quicker for simple screenshots: open the file, orient the model, enable the required visibility and section settings, then use its screenshot or image-export command if available.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

PNG export is view-dependent: changing the camera, projection, hidden categories, clipping plane, or display mode changes the result. Export at the final required size; enlarging a small PNG later cannot restore geometric detail. For printed drawings, use a high resolution such as 300 dpi at the intended physical size, or export a vector PDF when the receiving application supports it.

IFC files may contain multiple geometric representations, unsupported schema entities, tessellated meshes, linked models, or materials that a converter cannot reproduce exactly. Confirm that the desired building elements are visible after import. A PNG also cannot be used to perform BIM takeoffs, clash detection, object selection, or property queries; keep the original IFC alongside the image when model data may be needed later.
