Convert OBJ to PNG

An OBJ file is a 3D model, while PNG is a 2D image format. So converting .obj to .png usually means rendering a view of the model and saving that rendered image as PNG, not preserving the 3D data itself.

How to convert obj to png

There is no direct one-step conversion that turns a full .obj model into a .png image with geometry intact. Instead, you open the model in a 3D program, choose a camera angle, set lighting and background, and then render or export the view as an image.

1. Open the .obj file in a 3D application or viewer.
2. Make sure the related .mtl file and texture images are in the correct location if the model uses them.
3. Adjust the camera, lighting, shading, and background.
4. Render the scene or export the viewport as an image.
5. Save the output as .png.

Software that can do this

Common tools for rendering an OBJ to PNG include Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, and other 3D viewers or renderers. In Blender, you can import the model with File → Import → Wavefront (.obj), then render the scene with Render → Render Image and save the result as PNG.

Important notes

PNG is a flat image format, so it cannot store 3D geometry, animation, or editable materials from the OBJ file. If you need to keep the model for future editing, retain the original .obj file along with its .mtl and texture files. If you only need a preview or shareable snapshot, PNG is a good choice because it supports lossless compression and transparency.

Online conversion

Some online tools can generate a preview image from an OBJ file, but quality, lighting, and texture handling vary. Large models may also upload slowly or fail to process. For the best control over the final image, a desktop 3D application is usually the better option.
