Free online IGES to PNG converter

CAD documentation, presentations, web pages, and issue reports often require a viewable raster image instead of an editable IGES model. Converting the file to PNG renders the selected model view as pixels that can be shared without CAD software, but the result no longer contains editable 3D geometry.

What the IGES format is

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) is a neutral CAD exchange format used to transfer engineering data between systems from different vendors. Files normally use the .igs or .iges extension and can contain wireframes, curves, surfaces, annotations, and, depending on the exporter and importer, solid-model entities.

Mechanical and industrial design teams use IGES when exchanging parts, legacy engineering data, or models between applications that do not share the same native format. CAD systems such as CATIA, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Siemens NX, PTC Creo, and FreeCAD can import or export IGES, although entity support and import quality vary between programs.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster image format. It stores pixels rather than curves, surfaces, solids, or CAD metadata, and supports full-color images, lossless compression, and transparent backgrounds.

PNG works well for model thumbnails, technical documents, slide presentations, email attachments, websites, and issue reports. It is easier to display and embed than a CAD file, but it cannot preserve 3D rotation, measurement, layers, parametric history, tolerances, materials, or assembly relationships. PNG also has no inherent millimeter or inch scale.

How to convert IGES to PNG

Using FreeCAD

1. Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open, then select the .igs or .iges file.
2. Wait for the import to finish and confirm that the model appears in the 3D view. Large files and complex surface models may take longer to load.
3. Choose an axonometric, front, top, or right view, then use View → Fit all to frame the complete model.
4. In the model tree, hide construction geometry, unwanted bodies, or reference objects. Adjust the display mode, object color, transparency, and background to improve contrast.
5. Choose View → Save image, select PNG, set the output dimensions if the dialog provides them, and save the image.

FreeCAD saves the current viewport, not the original IGES data. Set the viewport size or export resolution before saving; enlarging a small PNG afterward cannot restore edge detail.

Using the built-in converter

Quality and compatibility limits

IGES is an exchange format, not a guarantee that every feature in the source CAD model will transfer correctly. An import may contain gaps, missing surfaces, unsupported entities, incorrect colors, or separate bodies. If the model is invisible or incomplete, try another CAD viewer or repair the imported geometry before rendering.

The conversion produces a two-dimensional snapshot, not a 3D PNG model. It cannot retain CAD layers, editable geometry, design history, exact measurements, or assembly structure. Keep the original IGES file with the PNG when recipients may need to inspect or measure the model.

• Use a large output, such as 2000 pixels or more on the longest side, for detailed documentation.
• Enable antialiasing when available to reduce jagged edges.
• Use a plain background with sufficient contrast; transparency helps with page layouts, while white is usually more compatible with office documents and printing.
• Check the final PNG at its intended display size, because thin edges and small annotations can disappear at reduced dimensions.
