GIF is useful when a CAD recipient, web page, or documentation system accepts only a small raster image instead of a 3D model. Converting an IGES file to GIF creates a rendered 2D preview; it does not preserve editable geometry, dimensions, or 3D navigation.
What the IGES format is
IGES, usually stored with .igs or .iges, is a neutral CAD exchange format for transferring wireframes, curves, surfaces, and some solid-model data between engineering applications. Mechanical and industrial CAD systems such as CATIA, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Siemens NX, and FreeCAD can create or import IGES files. You typically encounter IGES when receiving legacy design data, exchanging models between different CAD vendors, or opening an older engineering archive.
What the GIF format is
GIF is a raster image format, not a 3D modeling format. It stores pixels with a maximum palette of 256 colors, supports lossless compression for indexed-color artwork, and can include one-bit transparency or multiple animation frames. A GIF is suitable for a compact CAD preview, web documentation, email attachment, or simple line drawing; it cannot retain the IGES model's surfaces, measurements, layers, or selectable entities.
How to convert IGES to GIF
Using the built-in online converter
- Open 101convert.com and choose the IGES-to-GIF conversion.
- Upload the
.igsor.igesfile. - Start the conversion, then download the generated
.giffile.
This option requires no software installation. The result is normally a rendered view, so check the preview for the desired camera angle, hidden edges, and readable scale.
Using FreeCAD and ImageMagick
- Install FreeCAD and ImageMagick.
- In FreeCAD, open the IGES file with File → Open. Select the imported object and use View → Standard views and View → Fit all to set the orientation and framing.
- Set the display mode, background, and visibility of edges as required. Use FreeCAD's image or screenshot command, commonly available through View → Save image, to save a sufficiently large PNG such as
model.png. Menu names can vary between FreeCAD versions. - Convert the rendered PNG to GIF with ImageMagick:
magick model.png -colors 256 model.gif
For a smaller file, resize before palette conversion:
magick model.png -resize 1200x1200 -colors 256 model.gif
FreeCAD performs the CAD import and rendering; ImageMagick performs the raster-format conversion. A different desktop CAD viewer can be used if it can open IGES and export a PNG or other bitmap.
Quality and limitations
- Increase the exported image dimensions before creating the GIF; enlarging a small GIF later produces blurred edges and unreadable details.
- GIF's 256-color limit can cause banding or dithering in shaded models. Use a PNG instead when the recipient accepts it and photographic shading or gradients matter.
- Use a plain, contrasting background and visible edges for technical previews. Hidden-line settings and perspective can change the apparent shape without changing the source model.
- IGES files may contain several entities or disconnected parts. Confirm that all required objects are visible before exporting the image.
- Some IGES imports contain unsupported entities, missing trims, or incorrect surface orientation. Repair or adjust the model in a CAD application before rendering if the preview is incomplete.
