CAD viewers, documentation systems, and web pages sometimes require a lightweight image instead of an editable 3D model. Converting an STP file to GIF produces a raster preview for sharing or embedding, not a geometry-preserving CAD file.

What the STP format is

STP, usually identified by .stp or .step, is the ISO 10303 STEP exchange format for precise 3D CAD data. It can contain solid and surface geometry, assemblies, product structure, units, colors, and metadata. SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Autodesk Fusion, FreeCAD, and many other mechanical-design programs create or open STEP files. You encounter STP files when exchanging parts between different CAD systems or downloading manufacturer models.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a raster image format suited to small web graphics, documentation thumbnails, interface previews, and simple animations. It supports lossless compression, transparency, and animation, but each frame is limited to a palette of 256 colors. A GIF cannot store CAD solids, dimensions, parametric features, assembly relationships, or editable 3D viewpoints.

How to actually convert STP to GIF

Use the built-in online converter

  1. Open the STP-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.
  2. Upload the .stp or .step file.
  3. Select GIF as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .gif file after processing finishes.

The service renders the model from a chosen or default viewpoint and places that rendered view in an image file. If options are available, set the image dimensions, background color, and camera orientation before converting. For confidential engineering data, use a local CAD workflow instead of uploading the source model.

Convert locally with FreeCAD and ImageMagick

FreeCAD can open the model and render a view; ImageMagick can encode the rendered image as GIF.

  1. Open the STP file in FreeCAD with File → Open.
  2. Set the desired camera orientation using the standard views or mouse controls, fit the model to the window, and select a suitable display mode.
  3. Open FreeCAD’s Python console and save a rendered PNG with a command such as Gui.activeDocument().activeView().saveImage("model.png", 1200, 900, "White", 1.0).
  4. Convert the PNG to GIF with ImageMagick: magick model.png model.gif.

A GIF animation requires multiple rendered views rather than one direct CAD conversion. Save a numbered image sequence, such as frame001.png through frame036.png, and run magick -delay 8 -loop 0 frame*.png model.gif. The delay is measured in hundredths of a second, and -loop 0 repeats the animation indefinitely.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The output depends on the rendered view, lighting, edge display, and image resolution; it does not preserve the exact STEP geometry. GIF’s 256-color palette can create banding in shaded surfaces, so a PNG is usually better for high-quality still documentation. GIF is useful when broad compatibility, small previews, or animation matters.

Large or complex assemblies may take longer to render and can produce a large GIF, especially when animation contains many high-resolution frames. Reduce the frame size or color count when file size matters. A recipient who needs to measure, edit, hide components, or change the viewpoint should receive the original STP file or a format such as STEP, not the GIF.
