What the STP format is

STP, also written as .step, is a neutral STEP format for exchanging 3D CAD data. Many STP files use the ISO 10303-21 Part 21 encoding and contain precise solid or surface geometry, assemblies, and product-structure information.

Mechanical engineers, manufacturers, suppliers, and CAD users exchange STP files when transferring parts or assemblies between programs such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion, and FreeCAD. An STP file stores model geometry for CAD operations; it is not a finished picture.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a widely supported, lossy raster image format that stores colored pixels. It is suitable for catalog images, documentation, email attachments, web pages, and previews, and is typically much smaller than the source CAD file.

A JPEG contains no editable faces, edges, dimensions, tolerances, assembly relationships, or parametric features. Use PNG instead when transparent backgrounds, sharp linework, or lossless output are more important than file size.

How to convert STP to JPEG

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the STP-to-JPEG converter on 101convert.com. The conversion is free and does not require installed software.
2. Upload the .stp or .step file.
3. Start the conversion and wait for the CAD model to be rendered.
4. Download the resulting .jpg file.

An online converter generally renders the model using its available default camera, shading, and background settings. If the exact angle, visibility of components, projection, or image size matters, prepare the view in desktop CAD software first.

Using FreeCAD

1. Open FreeCAD and choose File → Open, then select the .stp or .step file.
2. Wait for the parts to load. Hide unwanted components in the model tree.
3. Set the camera with View → Standard views or by rotating the model, then choose View → Fit all to frame it.
4. Select a display mode such as shaded or shaded with edges.
5. Choose View → Save image..., select JPEG in the save dialog, set the available image dimensions and quality options, and save the file as model.jpg.

Other CAD applications use comparable commands such as Capture image, Save screenshot, or an image export command. A normal CAD export cannot preserve 3D geometry in JPEG; the program must export a rendered view or screenshot.

Quality and compatibility limitations

• The conversion discards CAD precision, editability, measurements, materials, hidden geometry, and assembly relationships. The JPEG cannot be reopened as a rotatable model.
• Use a sufficiently large output resolution and a moderate or high JPEG quality setting for technical documentation. JPEG compression can create artifacts around model edges, especially after repeated editing and saving.
• Use orthographic projection for dimensionally clear technical views and perspective projection for presentation images.
• Keep the original STP file for manufacturing, inspection, or later CAD changes. Choose high-resolution PNG instead of JPEG when crisp edges or transparency are required.
