3D software and websites often accept JPEG images but not OFF mesh files, so an OFF model must be rendered before it can be shared, edited as a picture, or used in documentation. The conversion produces a 2D view of the model; it does not preserve the mesh as an editable 3D object.

What the OFF format is

OFF, or Object File Format, is a simple polygon-mesh format used in 3D modeling, geometry research, and visualization. An ordinary .off file stores vertex coordinates and polygon face indexes, usually as readable ASCII text; related variants such as COFF can also store vertex colors. The format is associated with Geomview and is supported by mesh utilities such as MeshLab, where it is commonly encountered when exchanging academic, scanned, or procedurally generated models.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG is a compressed 2D raster-image format suited to web pages, email, previews, documentation, and general image editing. It is widely supported and produces much smaller files than uncompressed screenshots, but its lossy compression can create artifacts around edges and does not store vertices, faces, depth, materials, or camera-independent 3D data.

How to actually convert OFF to JPEG

Using MeshLab

  1. Install and open MeshLab, then choose File → Import Mesh and select the .off file.
  2. Check that the mesh is visible and correctly oriented. Use the trackball controls to rotate it, and adjust zoom and pan to frame the required view.
  3. Set the display appearance before exporting: enable flat or smooth shading, show or hide wireframe edges, choose a background color, and enable lighting if the model needs visible depth.
  4. Use MeshLab's snapshot command under the Render menu or its camera/snapshot toolbar control. Set the output resolution and save the rendered image as .jpg or .jpeg.
  5. Choose a high JPEG quality setting when available, then open the result in an image viewer to verify cropping, background, and edge quality.

For a conversion without installing software, upload the OFF file to 101convert.com, choose JPEG as the output format, and download the generated image. Online conversion still renders the model from one view rather than transferring its 3D geometry.

Quality and compatibility limitations

OFF does not normally define a camera, lighting setup, textures, or a finished visual appearance, so different viewers can produce different JPEG images from the same file. Colored OFF variants may retain vertex colors in a compatible renderer, while texture maps and advanced materials generally require separate handling.

Increase the render resolution before saving rather than enlarging a small JPEG afterward. Use a quality value near the maximum for thin features, sharp silhouettes, or text; JPEG cannot provide transparency, so replace a transparent or empty background with a solid color. Keep the original OFF file when later editing, measuring, rotating, or rendering the model from another angle is required.
