A USDZ model must be rendered into a flat image when a document, catalog, CMS, or messaging app accepts JPEG but cannot display 3D content. JPEG is also easier to share and archive, but the conversion preserves only one selected view rather than the model’s geometry or interactivity.
What the USDZ format is
USDZ is a packaged form of Pixar’s Universal Scene Description format for distributing 3D scenes. A package can contain geometry, materials, textures, cameras, lighting data, and animation, commonly stored in USD, USDA, or USDC scene files.
Apple uses USDZ for AR Quick Look on iPhone, iPad, and macOS. You may also encounter files exported by Reality Composer, Reality Converter, Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D, and other applications with USD support. A USDZ file is intended to be viewed as a 3D scene, not as a single picture.
What the JPEG format is
JPEG is a lossy raster-image format identified by the .jpg or .jpeg extension. It stores pixels rather than meshes, materials, cameras, or animation.
JPEG is suitable for web pages, product listings, reports, email, and applications that accept ordinary photographs. Its compression produces relatively small files, but it does not support transparent backgrounds and repeated saving can reduce image quality.
How to actually convert USDZ to JPEG
Render with Blender
- Install a Blender version with Universal Scene Description import support.
- If Blender does not accept the package directly, unpack it with
unzip model.usdz -d model_unpacked. Keep the extracted USD files and texture files in their relative folder structure. - In Blender, choose File → Import → Universal Scene Description (.usd) and select the main extracted USD scene file. If the package contains several scene files, import the one that represents the complete model.
- Check the imported materials and textures. Add or reposition a camera and lights if the USDZ scene does not contain a usable camera or lighting setup.
- Set the output resolution in Output Properties → Format, select the camera view, and choose Render → Render Image.
- In the render window, choose Image → Save As, select JPEG, set the quality value, and save the result as
model.jpg.
For a quick reference image on macOS, open the USDZ file with Quick Look, position the model, and capture the displayed view. This is fast but produces a screen-resolution image and does not provide controlled camera, lighting, or export settings.
Use the built-in online converter
On 101convert.com, upload the USDZ file, select JPEG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting image. An online conversion is convenient when no 3D application is installed, but inspect the output because automatic rendering may choose its own camera, background, and image dimensions.
Quality and compatibility limitations
The result is a render of one viewpoint, not a photographic extraction of every part of the USDZ scene. A model with multiple cameras, animation frames, or hidden objects requires separate renders for each desired view or frame.
JPEG cannot retain 3D interaction, mesh data, animation, material editing, or transparency. If the USDZ uses an alpha background, render against a solid color before exporting to JPEG; use PNG instead when transparent output is required.
Textures may look different after import because USDZ materials can use features that a particular renderer does not reproduce exactly. Missing textures, unsupported shaders, incorrect color management, and absent lights can produce a black, untextured, or differently shaded image. For print or detailed inspection, render at the final required pixel dimensions rather than enlarging a small Quick Look screenshot.
