A USDZ model must be rendered to a 2D image before it can become a BMP, because BMP stores pixels rather than 3D geometry. This is useful when a Windows application, image editor, documentation system, or legacy workflow accepts BMP but cannot open USDZ.

What the USDZ format is

USDZ is a packaged, usually uncompressed archive of Universal Scene Description data and its assets, including meshes, materials, textures, lights, cameras, and animation. Apple uses it for augmented-reality previews in AR Quick Look, and it is created or exported by Reality Composer, Reality Composer Pro, Reality Converter, Pixar USD tools, and some 3D applications such as Blender.

You commonly encounter USDZ files in product visualization, e-commerce AR, iPhone and iPad previews, architectural models, and asset exchange between compatible 3D programs. A USDZ file does not contain a single natural 2D view, so conversion to BMP requires choosing a camera angle and rendering the scene.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores each pixel directly, commonly at 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA color depth. It is supported by Windows software, basic image editors, technical-documentation tools, and older image-processing systems.

BMP is useful when uncompressed pixel data and predictable compatibility matter. Its main disadvantage is file size: a 1920 × 1080 24-bit BMP requires roughly 6 MB before row padding and file overhead, while PNG usually stores the same rendered image much more efficiently.

How to actually convert USDZ to BMP

Convert on 101convert.com

  1. Open the USDZ-to-BMP converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .usdz file.
  3. Select BMP as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting bitmap when processing finishes.

This type of conversion produces a rendered image using the converter's available scene view and rendering defaults. It does not preserve editable meshes, materials, animation, or AR metadata in the BMP.

Render a controlled view in Blender

  1. Open Blender and choose File → Import → Universal Scene Description, then select the USDZ file. In Blender versions that do not list USDZ directly, extract the archive with a USDZ-capable tool and import the contained USD scene.
  2. Inspect the imported model. Add a camera with Add → Camera if the file has no usable camera, and add lights with Add → Light when the imported scene is unlit.
  3. Position the camera and set the required output dimensions under Output Properties → Format → Resolution.
  4. Under Output Properties → Output, set File Format to BMP. Choose RGB for a solid background or RGBA if the target software supports BMP transparency.
  5. Render with Render → Render Image or press F12.
  6. Save the result through Image → Save As, using a filename such as model_view.bmp.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The result depends on camera placement, lighting, background color, render engine, texture availability, and material support; it is not a faithful file-level conversion of the 3D asset. USDZ textures can be embedded, referenced, compressed, or authored with shaders that another renderer does not reproduce exactly.

Choose the render resolution before exporting because increasing a small BMP later cannot restore detail. BMP has no standard support for modern color management, physically based materials, animation, depth, or multiple camera views; export one BMP per required view or frame. For transparent output, verify that the receiving application accepts 32-bit BMP alpha, since many older BMP readers ignore or reject the alpha channel.
