What the USDZ format is
USDZ is a packaged, usually compressed form of Universal Scene Description (USD) used to distribute 3D scenes and models with their geometry, materials, textures, cameras, and sometimes animation in one file.
Apple Reality Composer, Reality Converter, RealityKit-based workflows, and other USD-compatible 3D applications create or export USDZ files. You commonly encounter them as AR Quick Look assets on iPhone and iPad, product models on websites, and models exchanged between 3D design and visualization tools.
What the PNG format is
PNG is a lossless raster-image format suited to rendered model previews, documentation, product listings, presentations, and editing in 2D applications. It supports RGBA transparency, so a rendered model can be saved without a background when the renderer supports transparent output.
PNG stores pixels rather than 3D data. It cannot retain the USDZ model's camera navigation, depth, mesh, materials as editable objects, animation, or AR placement information.
How to convert USDZ to PNG
Use the built-in online converter
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software:
- Open the USDZ-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.usdzfile. - Select
PNGas the output format and start the conversion. - Download the rendered
.pngfile when processing finishes.
The resulting image represents the converter's selected camera angle, lighting, and background. If the service offers preview or rendering controls, set the view before converting and choose a transparent background when an alpha channel is required.
Render it in Blender
Blender is preferable when you need control over the camera, lighting, resolution, background, and output quality:
- Open Blender and choose File → Import → Universal Scene Description.
- Select the
.usdzfile. Availability and material support depend on the Blender version and the USD features used by the asset. - Position the camera and add or adjust lights. Use the rendered viewport to verify that textures and transparency loaded correctly.
- Set the image dimensions under Output Properties → Format, choose
PNGunder Output Properties → Output, and enable RGBA if transparency is needed. - Render with Render → Render Image, then save the result with Image → Save As.
For a quick, non-editable preview on macOS, open the USDZ in Quick Look, set the desired angle, and capture the model view as a screenshot; this is a screen image rather than a controlled render.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A single PNG cannot show multiple viewpoints or model animation. Create several renders if the recipient needs front, side, rear, or detail views.
USDZ files may contain physically based materials, embedded textures, unsupported shaders, or animation features that a particular converter cannot reproduce. Missing textures, different lighting, and changed color management can make the PNG differ from the original AR preview.
For print or detailed catalog use, render at the required final dimensions or larger and downsample once; enlarging a small PNG will not restore model detail. Use an opaque background for maximum compatibility, or retain RGBA transparency when the image will be composited over another design.
