A JPEG is useful when a SketchUp model must be attached to an email, placed in a document or presentation, published on a website, or viewed on a device without 3D software. The conversion produces a flat image of one model view, not an editable 3D file.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp’s native project format for polygon-based 3D models. Architects, interior designers, builders, landscape designers, furniture makers, engineers, and 3D-printing users use SketchUp and SKP files to create and exchange models; 3D Warehouse also distributes many models in this format.

An SKP file can contain geometry, groups, components, materials, textures, styles, scenes, layers or tags, shadows, camera settings, and model metadata. SketchUp Desktop and SketchUp for Web create and edit SKP files, but compatibility can depend on the SketchUp version. A JPEG export does not retain these model objects or settings as editable data.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, commonly saved with the .jpg or .jpeg extension, is a compressed raster-image format. Web browsers, office applications, phones, image viewers, and most image editors support it, making JPEG practical for previews, presentation slides, listings, email attachments, and screen viewing.

JPEG uses lossy compression, so it can reduce file size but may soften edges, text, and fine textures or create artifacts around thin lines. Standard JPEG does not support transparent backgrounds. Use PNG when transparency or cleaner line detail is required, and use PDF or another vector-capable format for drawings that need precise lines and labels.

How to convert SKP to JPEG in SketchUp Desktop

1. Open the SKP file and activate the required scene, or set the camera angle manually. Adjust the visible tags, style, materials, shadows, section cuts, background, and viewport framing.
2. Choose File → Export → 2D Graphic.
3. Choose JPEG, JPEG Image (*.jpg), or the equivalent JPEG option shown by your SketchUp version. Select a destination and enter a filename such as house-view.jpg.
4. Open Options, when available. Set the output width and height, JPEG quality, and any anti-aliasing or rendering options provided by that version. Set the pixel dimensions before exporting rather than enlarging the result afterward.
5. Click Export and inspect the image at its intended screen or print size.

SketchUp exports the visible 2D result from the active camera view. Export each required scene separately. For print, calculate the required pixel width with pixels = inches × ppi; an 8-inch-wide image at 300 ppi requires 2,400 pixels across. The available dimensions and quality controls vary between SketchUp releases and editions.

• The JPEG contains one selected camera view and cannot be rotated, measured, or edited as a 3D model.
• It does not preserve editable geometry, groups, components, scenes, tags, materials as model objects, model scale, animation, or separate shadow data.
• Hidden geometry and alternate scenes are not included unless exported in their own views.
• A transparent or partially transparent SketchUp background becomes a nontransparent JPEG background; use PNG when transparency is required.
• Low output dimensions and low JPEG quality can make small labels, text, textures, and thin edges unreadable. Repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG can add further compression loss.
• Enlarging a small export cannot restore missing detail. Export at the final required pixel dimensions and use PNG or PDF when sharp technical lines matter more than JPEG’s smaller file size.
• If SketchUp cannot open the SKP file because it was saved by a newer release, open it in a compatible newer release or save it to an older supported SKP version before exporting. JPEG itself has no SketchUp-version dependency.
