What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp’s native project format for architectural models, interiors, site layouts, product concepts, and general polygonal 3D design. An SKP file can contain geometry, groups, components, materials, scenes, tags, section data, and model metadata.

SKP is optimized for editing in SketchUp rather than for interchange. Different SketchUp releases use different SKP revisions, so a newer file may not open in an older release. SketchUp-specific features such as dynamic components, styles, shadows, dimensions, annotations, and section cuts generally require conversion to a simpler representation before export.

What the VRML format is

VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) is a text-based 3D scene format, usually saved as .wrl or compressed as .wrz. VRML97, also called VRML 2.0, describes polygon meshes, transforms, viewpoints, lights, colors, image textures, and limited animation and interaction nodes.

VRML remains useful when a legacy viewer, simulator, teaching application, visualization package, or 3D repository specifically requires it. Its text structure is easy to inspect and archive, but it is older than formats such as glTF and usually provides less consistent material, lighting, and animation support.

Convert SKP to VRML online

3. Download the resulting .wrl file.
4. Open the file in the target VRML viewer or application and check its scale, orientation, materials, and textures.

Do not rename .skp to .wrl; changing an extension does not change the file format.

Desktop conversion with FreeCAD

For a local workflow, export an intermediate Collada file from a SketchUp edition that provides 3D model export, then use FreeCAD to write VRML.

1. Open the model in SketchUp and remove hidden, unnecessary, or excessively detailed geometry.
2. Choose File → Export → 3D Model, select Collada (*.dae), enable texture export if available, and save the file with its texture images.
3. Open FreeCAD and choose File → Import to load the .dae file.
4. Inspect the imported objects and remove unwanted cameras, construction geometry, or other objects.
5. Select the objects to export, choose File → Export, select VRML 2.0 (*.wrl), and save the result.
6. Open the exported file in a VRML viewer and verify the model before delivering it.

Export options differ between SketchUp editions and versions. If Collada is unavailable, use a compatible SketchUp export extension or the built-in 101convert.com workflow; an SKP file cannot be converted by changing its filename.

Quality and compatibility limits

• The result is polygonal interchange geometry, not an editable SketchUp project. Dynamic components, scenes, tags, styles, shadows, dimensions, annotations, section cuts, and many procedural materials do not transfer as equivalent VRML features.
• Inspect for reversed faces, missing or incorrectly referenced textures, changed scale, broken transparency, and excessive polygon counts.
• VRML texture references may point to separate image files. Keep those images with the .wrl file and preserve the referenced paths, or edit the VRML URLs for the target application.
• VRML does not provide a universal unit declaration. Many applications interpret one unit as one metre, but confirm the target software’s convention. VRML uses a Y-up coordinate system; importers may rotate or rescale the scene.
• Purge unused data, reduce high-detail repeated components, export only required visible geometry, and reduce oversized textures when targeting older viewers or limited hardware.
