How to convert skp to stl file

A 3D printer, slicer, CAD application, or fabrication service may require STL instead of SketchUp's native SKP format. The conversion creates a triangulated surface mesh, so the exported file must be checked for scale, face direction, gaps, and printable geometry.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp's native project format. It stores editable 3D geometry along with groups, components, scenes, materials, styles, dimensions, tags, and model metadata.

SketchUp creates SKP files, which are common in architecture, interior design, woodworking, site planning, construction, and 3D visualization. SKP preserves SketchUp-specific editing data, but many slicers, CNC applications, and general-purpose CAD programs cannot open it directly. Files saved by newer SketchUp releases may also require a compatible version or a down-saved copy.

What the STL format is

STL describes an object's outer surface as a collection of triangular facets. It is accepted by most 3D-printing slicers, mesh-repair applications, rapid-prototyping services, and many CAD programs.

STL is appropriate when the recipient needs printable or mesh-based geometry rather than SketchUp scenes and editable design data. Binary STL is normally smaller and faster to process than ASCII STL; neither standard reliably stores units, colors, textures, groups, materials, or design history.

How to convert SKP to STL

Using SketchUp

  1. Open the file in a desktop SketchUp edition that provides STL export. If the file was created in a newer release, open it in a compatible version or save it to an older SKP version first.
  2. Set the model to its intended real-world dimensions using Window → Model Info → Units. Remove construction geometry, annotations, cameras, and objects that should not be manufactured.
  3. Select the required object if selection-based export is available. Otherwise, hide unwanted geometry or copy the part into a separate model.
  4. Choose File → Export → 3D Model, select STL, and specify a filename such as part.stl. The exact menu labels depend on the SketchUp edition and release.
  5. Choose binary STL for normal printing and fabrication. Choose ASCII only when a downstream application specifically requires human-readable text.
  6. Open the result in the intended slicer or a mesh checker, such as PrusaSlicer, UltiMaker Cura, Microsoft 3D Builder, or MeshLab, and verify its dimensions and surface integrity.

If the installed edition has no STL command, install the official SketchUp STL extension from the SketchUp Extension Warehouse, provided it supports that SketchUp release. Use the extension's own export command and installation instructions; extension menus and compatibility change between releases.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert and Convertio provide browser-based SKP-to-STL conversion when their current services accept the particular SKP file. Upload the source, select STL, start the conversion, and download the result. Online services may reject large or complex models and depend on their own SKP parser.

Review file-size limits, retention policies, and privacy terms before uploading proprietary architectural or client data. Desktop export is preferable for confidential, large, or production-critical models because the source remains local and the geometry can be prepared directly in SketchUp.

Quality and compatibility checks

  • Make a closed solid: A printable part needs a watertight outer shell without holes, loose edges, duplicate internal faces, self-intersections, or zero-thickness surfaces. SketchUp's Solid Inspector extension can find many common defects; Microsoft 3D Builder and Netfabb can repair some exported meshes.
  • Correct face directions: SketchUp distinguishes front and back faces. Select connected geometry, choose Reverse Faces where needed, then use Orient Faces to propagate consistent directions. Reversed normals can produce missing or inverted regions in a slicer.
  • Increase curve resolution when necessary: SketchUp circles and arcs are approximated by straight segments. Set a higher segment count before export when curved surfaces look faceted. Excessive segmentation increases file size without improving the physical result beyond the printer or manufacturing process's resolution.
  • Verify scale after export: STL has no dependable unit declaration. A slicer may interpret millimeter dimensions as inches or apply another unit assumption. Measure a known feature and enter the intended scale manually if required.
  • Expect data loss: Materials, textures, scenes, dimensions, tags, component behavior, and SketchUp editing history do not survive a normal STL export. Export separate STL files for parts that must remain independently printable or manufactured.
  • Add physical wall thickness: Single faces, open surfaces, and walls thinner than the printer nozzle or manufacturing process cannot produce a reliable part. Model actual thickness before exporting.
