Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A 3D printer, slicer, or CAD application requires an STL mesh, but WEBP contains only a flat raster image. Converting it therefore requires choosing a 3D interpretation, such as an extruded silhouette or a height-map relief, rather than changing the file extension.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It stores lossy or lossless RGB images and can also contain transparency or animation, although an STL conversion uses only a single still image.

Web browsers, website optimization tools, phone cameras, screenshot utilities, and graphics applications commonly create or save WEBP files. You may encounter one after downloading an image from a website or exporting artwork from software such as Photoshop, GIMP, or a browser-based design tool.

What the STL format is

STL stores the surface of a 3D object as a collection of triangular facets. It is supported by slicers, 3D-printing software, CAD applications, mesh editors, and many manufacturing systems.

STL is useful when the result must be sliced into printer layers or exchanged as a simple manufacturing mesh. Binary STL files are smaller than ASCII STL files and are the usual choice for 3D printing, but STL normally carries no color, textures, materials, or units.

How to actually convert WEBP to STL

Make an extruded silhouette in Blender

This method suits logos, icons, and other images with a clear foreground shape.

  1. Convert the WEBP to PNG if the selected 3D tool cannot read WEBP. Use an image editor and choose File → Export, or use ImageMagick with magick input.webp output.png.
  2. Use Inkscape to vectorize the image: open the PNG, choose Path → Trace Bitmap, remove unwanted traced regions, and save the result as shape.svg.
  3. In Blender, choose File → Import → Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg). Select the imported curve, open its curve properties, and set Extrude to the required thickness.
  4. Convert the curve to a mesh with Object → Convert → Mesh. Apply a solidify or triangulate modifier if the mesh has open or unsuitable surfaces.
  5. Check the dimensions in the item properties, apply the object scale with Object → Apply → Scale, and select File → Export → STL. Enable selection-only export if the scene contains other objects.

Make a relief or height-map model in Blender

This method converts brightness into elevation: lighter pixels become higher or lower depending on the displacement settings.

  1. Open Blender, delete the default cube, and add a plane with Add → Mesh → Grid. Give the grid enough subdivisions to preserve the image detail; a low-resolution grid produces stepped or blurred relief.
  2. In the plane’s UV Editing workspace, unwrap the plane with UV → Unwrap.
  3. Add a Displace modifier through Modifiers → Add Modifier → Displace, create a new texture, and set the texture type to an image or movie. Load the WEBP or its PNG copy.
  4. Set the displacement coordinates to UV, then adjust Strength and Midlevel. Add a solid base with a Solidify modifier or model a surrounding box so the exported object is watertight.
  5. Apply the modifiers, inspect the mesh in solid view, and export it through File → Export → STL. Select binary STL unless an ASCII file is specifically required.

For a quick browser-based attempt, 101convert.com can convert the file for free without installing software. Verify the generated mesh in a slicer because an automated converter must guess whether the image represents a silhouette, relief, or complete object.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A WEBP image does not contain depth, hidden surfaces, scale, or information about the intended object. A photograph cannot become an accurate printable 3D model through direct conversion; it requires photogrammetry, sculpting, or manual modeling and usually several views.

Transparent pixels can define a silhouette, but semi-transparent edges may create unwanted geometry during tracing. Remove the background and increase contrast before vectorization. Small raster features may disappear after tracing, while JPEG-like WEBP artifacts can create irregular outlines.

Before exporting, ensure the STL is watertight: every edge should belong to exactly two faces, normals should point consistently outward, and the model should have nonzero wall thickness. Open the STL in a slicer such as PrusaSlicer, Cura, or Bambu Studio to check scale, non-manifold errors, and the proposed toolpath.

STL has no reliable unit declaration. Set the Blender scene and export dimensions explicitly, then confirm the millimeter size in the slicer; a model can otherwise import at an unexpected scale.
