3D-printing slicers and mesh-based tools generally do not accept DWG, so a CAD model must be exported as STL before it can be prepared for printing. STL also provides a widely supported mesh for sharing a 3D shape with users who do not have AutoCAD or another DWG-capable CAD application.
What the DWG format is
DWG is Autodesk’s native CAD format for 2D drawings and 3D design data. It can store lines, arcs, dimensions, blocks, surfaces, meshes, and 3D solids, along with layers and other CAD information. AutoCAD creates DWG files; applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD can also open or save them. DWG is common in architecture, mechanical engineering, construction, surveying, and manufacturing documentation.
A DWG may contain only 2D linework. That linework cannot be exported as a useful printable STL until it is converted into closed profiles and modeled as a surface or solid.
What the STL format is
STL describes a surface as triangular facets. It does not preserve DWG layers, dimensions, blocks, colors, materials, constraints, parametric features, assemblies, or editable CAD history. Binary STL is usually preferable to ASCII STL because it is substantially smaller and faster to transfer.
Most 3D-printing slicers, mesh-repair applications, rapid-prototyping systems, and many 3D editors can import STL. STL has no inherent unit definition; export and import units must be coordinated manually. A unit mismatch commonly makes a model 25.4 times too large or too small.
How to convert a 3D DWG in AutoCAD
- Open the DWG and verify that it contains 3D solids, surfaces, or meshes. Orbit the model and use a 3D visual style; a top-view drawing of lines is not enough.
- Remove construction geometry, annotations, hidden objects, and anything that should not be manufactured. Use Home → Solid Editing → Union when separate solids should form one body.
- Repair gaps, open surfaces, self-intersections, duplicate faces, and extremely thin features in the source model. STL export does not turn defective CAD geometry into a printable solid.
- Set tessellation quality with the
FACETRESsystem variable where supported. Higher values generally produce finer facets and smoother curved surfaces, but increase file size. Judge the result at the intended print scale. - Run
STLOUT, select the objects to export, choose binary output, and save the file asmodel.stl. In releases that expose STL through the general exporter, use File → Export or Output → Export and select STL. Menu names vary by AutoCAD release and product. - Import the STL into the target slicer, set the intended measurement unit, and compare its bounding dimensions with the DWG before slicing.
Other desktop options
BricsCAD supports a comparable workflow: open the 3D DWG, validate the solid, use its STL export command or File → Export, select binary STL, and adjust tessellation or deviation settings if provided. The command and menu name depend on the edition and release.
Other CAD applications may import DWG and export STL, but support for DWG objects varies. Proxy objects, external references, custom vertical-application entities, and unsupported meshes may be omitted or converted incorrectly. Test the exported mesh rather than assuming every visible DWG object will be included.
Online conversion
For a simple, non-confidential 3D DWG, services such as CloudConvert or ConvertCADFiles can be alternatives when no desktop CAD application is available. Upload the file, select STL, choose binary output when available, download the result, and inspect it in a slicer or mesh viewer. Online services may reject DWGs containing unsupported proxy objects, external references, custom entities, or only 2D geometry. Do not upload proprietary designs, personal data, or controlled engineering files without checking the provider’s retention and security terms.
2D DWG files need modeling first
Converting 2D linework directly does not create a printable 3D object. In AutoCAD, create closed boundaries with BOUNDARY or convert suitable closed loops to regions with REGION. Then use EXTRUDE or PRESSPULL to create a solid, or model the required surfaces and thicknesses by another method. Export that 3D result as STL.
Quality and compatibility checks
Coarse tessellation produces visible polygonal edges and can introduce dimensional error on curved surfaces. Excessively fine tessellation creates large files without improving the printed result beyond the printer and slicer’s practical resolution. For precision work, measure the STL’s bounding dimensions and critical features against the original CAD model.
Inspect the mesh for holes, inverted normals, duplicate faces, non-manifold edges, disconnected shells, and self-intersections. MeshLab, Blender, Autodesk Netfabb, Windows 3D Viewer, and many slicers can detect or repair common defects. Reliable printing generally requires closed, watertight shells; a model may contain multiple separate shells, but each shell must be valid for the intended object.
Keep the original DWG as the editable master and treat the STL as a tessellated manufacturing or interchange copy.

Frequently asked questions
Will my DWG layers and dimensions be preserved in STL?
No, STL keeps only the model's triangulated surface geometry. Layers, dimensions, text, blocks, colors, and most other DWG drawing information are discarded.
Does converting DWG to STL make the model editable?
No, the result is a triangle mesh rather than an editable CAD solid or surface model. The model can still be scaled or repaired as a mesh, but converting it back will not restore the original DWG features.
What resolution should I use when converting DWG to STL?
Use a finer tessellation for curved or detailed parts and a coarser one for smaller files. The best setting depends on the source model and the required print accuracy; excessive coarseness can make curves visibly faceted.
Why is my DWG to STL conversion empty or not printable?
This often happens when the DWG contains only 2D entities, open surfaces, or unsupported drawing objects instead of a closed 3D solid. A printable STL generally needs a watertight, correctly oriented surface with consistent units.
