Free online BLEND to STL converter

3D printers, CAD applications, and mesh-repair tools commonly require STL instead of Blender’s native project format. Converting a BLEND project creates a triangulated surface mesh that can be printed, inspected, or shared without requiring Blender.

What the BLEND format is

.blend is Blender’s native project format. It can contain meshes, curves, cameras, lights, materials, textures, animation, modifiers, simulations, scene settings, and linked or packed assets. Blender files are used mainly for 3D modeling, animation, visual effects, game development, and 3D-printing workflows.

A BLEND file is a scene container rather than a single model. Before export, select the objects that should become part of the STL and hide or exclude everything else.

What the STL format is

.stl stores an object’s surface as triangular facets. It is widely supported by slicers for FDM, SLA, and other resin printers, and by many CAD, inspection, and mesh-repair applications.

STL does not preserve materials, textures, cameras, lights, animation, object names, or Blender modifiers as editable scene data. It also has no inherent unit system; binary STL is usually smaller than ASCII STL and is the normal choice for printing and sharing.

How to convert BLEND to STL

Using Blender

1. Open the project with File → Open and select the .blend file.
2. Select the required objects in the Outliner or 3D Viewport. Hide or exclude objects that should not appear in the exported mesh.
3. Convert curves, text, and other non-mesh objects with Object → Convert → Mesh if they must be exported as mesh geometry.
4. Check modifiers such as Mirror, Boolean, Solidify, and Subdivision Surface. Apply a modifier when the generated geometry must be fixed into the exported mesh; otherwise confirm that the exporter includes the evaluated modifier result.
5. Export with File → Export → STL (.stl). Enable Selection Only when only the selected objects should be written. Choose binary output unless another application specifically requires readable ASCII STL.
6. Set the export scale and axis options for the target application, save a filename such as model.stl, and confirm the export.
7. Open the STL in a slicer or mesh viewer and verify its dimensions, orientation, surfaces, and object placement.

For a one-off conversion, Blender’s graphical exporter is less error-prone than scripting. Blender can also automate repeated exports through its Python API, but the STL operator and option names vary between Blender releases; use the API documentation for the installed version.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Verify scale. Blender scene units and STL coordinates do not guarantee millimeters. Set the scene unit system and export scale deliberately, then measure a known dimension in the slicer or CAD application.
• Check for a printable solid. Inspect for holes, loose edges, internal faces, duplicate geometry, self-intersections, and non-manifold edges. In Blender, use Edit Mode → Select → Select All by Trait → Non-Manifold or enable the 3D Print Toolbox add-on.
• Check normals. Reversed or inconsistent face orientation can cause slicer errors. After repairing the mesh, use Edit Mode → Mesh → Normals → Recalculate Outside.
• Control curved-surface detail. STL contains triangles only, so curves become faceted. Increase the source mesh resolution or apply an appropriate subdivision level when faceting affects the finished part; excessive detail increases file size.
• Expect scene information to disappear. Materials, colors, textures, animation, lighting, cameras, and most object metadata are not carried into standard STL. Export separate STL files for separate printable parts, or use 3MF when the target workflow supports materials and multiple objects.
• Check multiple-object exports. STL can contain several disconnected shells, but some slicers merge, separate, or interpret them differently. Inspect the imported result before printing.
