Source format: KMZ

KMZ is a compressed KML package used mainly by Google Earth and other GIS/mapping tools. It can contain placemarks, paths, polygons, overlays, and linked resources such as images or icons. In some cases it also includes 3D content, such as extruded shapes or terrain-related geometry.

For KMZ to STL, the key point is that KMZ stores geospatial data, while STL stores a 3D surface mesh. A conversion is only meaningful when the KMZ contains actual geometry that can be turned into a mesh, such as buildings, extruded polygons, or terrain surfaces.

Target format: STL

STL is a widely supported 3D model format used in 3D printing, CAD, prototyping, and mesh processing. It represents geometry as a collection of triangular faces and does not store color, textures, units, or scene hierarchy in the standard form.

STL is a good choice when you need a printable mesh and do not need map data, labels, or imagery. If you need to preserve appearance or metadata, formats such as OBJ, 3MF, or PLY may be better.

How to perform the conversion

The best workflow depends on what your KMZ contains. In many cases, the most reliable desktop approach is to extract the KML from the KMZ, convert or import the geometry into a 3D tool, then export to STL.

Recommended desktop workflow: Blender

  1. Open Blender.
  2. If needed, extract the .kml file from the .kmz archive by renaming it to .zip or opening it with an archive tool.
  3. Import the geometry using a KML/KMZ import add-on or another supported import path.
  4. Check scale, orientation, and mesh integrity.
  5. If the imported data is only geographic lines or polygons, you may need to extrude or otherwise convert it into a closed 3D mesh before export.
  6. Export the model using File → Export → STL.
  7. Save the output as model.stl.

Recommended desktop workflow: QGIS + Blender

  1. Open QGIS and load the KMZ or extracted KML.
  2. Verify that the data contains polygons, extrusions, or other 3D-capable features.
  3. Convert the layer into a mesh-friendly form if needed, or use a plugin/workflow that can generate 3D geometry.
  4. Bring the resulting geometry into Blender for cleanup and export to STL.
  5. Use File → Export → STL to create the final file.

Alternative desktop tools

  • SketchUp: useful if the KMZ represents buildings or terrain and can be imported as geometry, then exported through a mesh workflow to STL.
  • MeshLab: helpful for cleaning and converting meshes after import from another tool.
  • Autodesk Fusion or 3ds Max: suitable when the KMZ data has already been turned into a mesh or CAD-friendly model.

Online converters

Direct online KMZ to STL conversion is uncommon because the formats serve different purposes. If you use an online service, make sure it clearly supports KMZ/KML import and STL export, and avoid uploading sensitive geographic data. A desktop workflow is usually safer and more reliable.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Direct conversion is often not possible unless the KMZ contains actual 3D geometry. A simple map overlay, route, or placemark cannot become a meaningful STL model without additional modeling.

Coordinate systems matter. KMZ data is geographic, while STL is usually unitless. During conversion, you may need to scale the model and choose a local coordinate origin to avoid precision problems.

Textures and colors are usually lost. Standard STL does not preserve materials, labels, or map imagery. If visual appearance matters, consider OBJ, 3MF, or PLY instead.

Mesh cleanup may be required. Imported geographic geometry can contain holes, non-manifold edges, or overly dense triangles. Before exporting to STL, repair the mesh and simplify it if needed for 3D printing.

Terrain and large datasets can be heavy. High-resolution geographic models may create very large STL files that are difficult to slice or print. Reducing detail and clipping the area of interest can improve results.

Bottom line: KMZ can be converted to STL only when it contains geometry that can be turned into a printable mesh. If it is just map data, you will need to model or extrude it first.
