Free online 3MF to STL converter

A slicer, printer utility, or older CAD application may require STL when a model is supplied as a 3MF project. Converting it produces a widely supported triangle mesh for printing, editing, or sharing, but removes most project and material data.

What the 3MF format is

3MF, the 3D Manufacturing Format, is a ZIP-based package defined by the 3MF Consortium. Its XML and resource files can store one or more meshes, units, object relationships, build-plate placement, colors, materials, textures, thumbnails, and print settings supplied through supported extensions.

3MF is used by modern 3D-printing software and CAD applications, including PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Ultimaker Cura, Microsoft 3D Builder, and Fusion 360. A file may be a single model or a complete slicer project containing several objects, their arrangement, modifiers, and printer settings. Applications do not necessarily preserve every 3MF extension when opening or saving the file.

What the STL format is

STL describes a surface as a collection of triangular facets. It does not provide a standard way to store scene layout, units, colors, textures, materials, supports, printer profiles, or slicer settings.

STL remains widely supported by slicers, printer utilities, mesh editors, and older CAD tools. Binary STL is normally preferable for exchange because it is much smaller than ASCII STL; both variants represent the same type of surface geometry. STL has no reliable unit declaration, so the receiving program must interpret the dimensions correctly.

How to convert 3MF to STL

Reopen the result in a slicer or mesh editor and verify its object count, dimensions, orientation, and watertight status.

For a 3MF slicer project, PrusaSlicer provides more control over which objects and placements are exported:

1. Open PrusaSlicer and choose File → Open Project, then select the .3mf file.
2. Inspect the build plate and object list. Check scale, orientation, positions, and the objects to include. Delete unwanted objects before exporting.
3. To export the arranged plate, choose File → Export → Export plate as STL and save the result with an .stl extension.
4. To export one object, select it in the object list, open its context menu, and choose Export as STL when available. Menu wording can vary between PrusaSlicer versions.
5. Import the STL into the intended slicer and confirm the dimensions and placement before printing.

Microsoft 3D Builder can also open many 3MF models. Open the file, choose Menu → Save as, select STL, and save the mesh. In a CAD application that supports both formats, open the 3MF, select the required body or mesh, and use its STL export command; choose the export tolerance or mesh-resolution settings when available.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Project information is discarded. STL preserves surface geometry only. Print profiles, supports, layer settings, colors, textures, materials, thumbnails, modifiers, and other metadata do not transfer.
• Several objects require inspection. Exporting a complete plate can create one STL containing all objects at their arranged positions. Exporting objects separately produces separate STL files and may be preferable for independent editing or placement.
• Units can cause a size error. STL does not identify millimeters, inches, or another unit. Confirm that a model intended to be 100 mm wide still measures 100 mm after import, and select millimeters in the receiving software when prompted.
• Mesh resolution affects the result. Conversion cannot restore detail absent from the source mesh. When exporting from CAD software, use its chord-height or deviation and angular-resolution controls to balance accuracy against file size.
• Invalid geometry remains a problem. Check for holes, non-manifold edges, inverted normals, intersecting shells, and other defects in a mesh editor or slicer repair tool before printing.
• Colors and assemblies are not retained in ordinary STL. Keep the original 3MF when color assignments, multiple materials, object relationships, or slicer settings are needed. Use 3MF or another format with appropriate material support instead of STL.
