Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A 3D application may require an FBX asset even when the available source is only a WEBP image. Because WEBP stores pixels and FBX stores 3D scene data, the practical conversion is to place the image on a model, usually a plane, and export that textured geometry as FBX.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, and is commonly created by web browsers, image editors, asset pipelines, and content-management systems. In 3D work, WEBP usually appears as a reference image, decal, texture, or preview downloaded from a website.

A WEBP contains color and alpha-pixel data but no vertices, faces, bones, cameras, lights, or animation. It therefore cannot directly become a complete 3D model merely by changing its filename extension.

What the FBX format is

FBX is an Autodesk scene-exchange format used by Blender, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Unity, Unreal Engine, and other 3D software. An FBX file can contain meshes, materials, UV coordinates, texture references, cameras, lights, armatures, skin weights, and animation.

FBX is useful when a textured object must move between modeling, animation, game-engine, and visualization software. Its main advantage over an image format is that it carries structured 3D scene information, but it cannot invent that information from a flat raster image.

How to actually convert WEBP to FBX

Using Blender

  1. Convert the WEBP to PNG if the destination application has limited WEBP support. ImageMagick can do this with magick input.webp output.png. Keep the PNG in the same project folder as the Blender file.
  2. Open Blender and create a plane with Add → Mesh → Plane. A plane is appropriate for a flat image, logo, poster, or reference card. Use another mesh, such as a cube or modeled object, if the image is meant to texture a three-dimensional asset.
  3. Set the plane dimensions to match the image aspect ratio. For example, an image that is 1920 × 1080 should use a 16:9 plane; otherwise the texture will be stretched.
  4. Open the Shading workspace, select the plane, and create a material. Add an Image Texture node, open output.png or the original input.webp, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Connect the image Alpha output to the Principled BSDF Alpha input when the image has transparency.
  5. For transparent pixels, set the material's blend mode in the material settings to an appropriate option such as Alpha Blend or Alpha Hashed. The exact setting name depends on the Blender version and render engine.
  6. Check the plane in Material Preview or Rendered view. Adjust the material's roughness, emission, or alpha settings only if the target application needs those properties.
  7. Select the object and choose File → Export → FBX (.fbx). Enable Selected Objects if the file should contain only this asset. Set Path Mode to Copy and enable Embed Textures when the destination supports embedded media. Otherwise, keep the image beside the FBX and preserve the relative folder structure.
  8. Open the exported FBX in the target program and verify the mesh, UVs, material, transparency, and texture path. Re-export with different FBX options if the application uses a different axis convention or fails to read the material.

Using 101convert.com

You can use the conversion tool on 101convert.com for free without installing software. For this particular format pair, check the result carefully: a generic converter may produce a flat plane with the image as a texture, while it cannot recover genuine 3D geometry, UV design, rigging, or animation from WEBP pixels.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • No geometry is recovered. The exported FBX represents a plane or other geometry that you create; silhouettes, depth, and surface details must be modeled separately.
  • WEBP transparency may not survive every FBX import. PNG is often a safer interchange texture, especially for cutouts, decals, and alpha masks.
  • FBX commonly stores a reference to the texture rather than a universally portable embedded copy. Test the destination and distribute the FBX with its texture folder unless embedding has been verified.
  • Lossy WEBP compression can produce block artifacts and color changes that remain visible on the exported material. Convert from the highest-quality source available; converting a low-quality WEBP to PNG does not restore lost detail.
  • For a genuine 3D reconstruction from a single image, use manual modeling, photogrammetry, or an image-to-3D tool first, then export the resulting mesh as FBX. That is a modeling workflow, not a file-format conversion.
