Model type
A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.
Model size (longest side)
Height
Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.
Mesh detail
More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.
Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

What the WEBP format is
WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web graphics. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, so it is commonly used for textures, reference images, decals, and preview graphics in browser-based 3D applications.
Browsers, image editors, web design tools, and some 3D applications create or save WEBP files. In a modeling workflow, a WEBP file is an image resource rather than a model: it has no vertices, faces, UV layout, skeleton, lighting, or scene hierarchy.
What the GLTF format is
GLTF is a 3D scene format designed for efficient transmission and loading. A .gltf file usually references a binary buffer and image files, while a .glb file packages the scene, geometry, materials, and supported images into one binary file.
GLTF stores meshes, node hierarchies, transforms, cameras, animations, physically based materials, and texture references. Web browsers, game engines, AR viewers, and tools such as Blender and Godot commonly support it. GLB is usually easier to share because it avoids separate texture and buffer files.
How to actually convert WEBP to GLTF
The reliable desktop method is Blender. It creates a minimal 3D asset by applying the WEBP image to a plane; it does not reconstruct 3D shape from the image.
- Install Blender and open a new scene.
- Delete the default cube with
X, then add a plane through Add → Mesh → Plane. - Switch to the Shading workspace and create or select a material for the plane.
- Add an Image Texture node, choose
your-image.webp, and connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF Base Color input. Connect its Alpha output to Principled BSDF Alpha if the WEBP contains transparency. - For transparent artwork, set Material Properties → Settings → Surface Render Method to Blended or Dithered, depending on the Blender version and required rendering behavior.
- Confirm that the plane has UV coordinates. Blender creates suitable default UVs for a new plane; use UV Editing if the image orientation or cropping needs adjustment.
- Export with File → Export → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf). Choose GLB to package the model and resources into one file, or choose glTF Separate when the target application requires a separate
.binbuffer and image files. - Enable Selected Objects when only the textured plane should be exported, then click Export glTF 2.0.
For a quick automated conversion without installing software, 101convert.com can process the file online. Since the source contains no geometry, verify that the generated result includes an intentional mesh, such as a plane, and not merely a renamed or packaged image.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- Geometry is not recoverable: a WEBP photograph or illustration cannot provide depth, topology, UVs, rigging, or animation. Model those elements separately in Blender or another 3D editor.
- Texture encoding may change: standard GLTF workflows commonly export textures as PNG or JPEG. PNG preserves transparency and lossless detail; JPEG produces smaller files but has no alpha channel and introduces lossy artifacts. The
EXT_texture_webpextension can preserve WEBP textures, but the receiving viewer must support that extension. - Color management affects appearance: connect ordinary color textures to Base Color as sRGB data. Normal, roughness, metallic, and other numeric maps require non-color data settings, although a single WEBP input normally represents only a color or alpha texture.
- GLTF and GLB are different deliverables: keep every referenced
.binand image file beside a separate.gltffile when distributing it. Use GLB when the recipient expects one portable file. - Transparency is viewer-dependent: alpha blending, double-sided rendering, and backface culling can vary between GLTF viewers. Enable double-sided materials when the plane must be visible from both sides.
