Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

Programs such as web viewers, game engines, and modern 3D tools commonly require glTF instead of a standalone DDS texture. Because DDS normally contains image data rather than geometry, converting it usually means decoding the texture, applying it to a 3D model, and exporting the complete asset as glTF.

What the DDS format is

DDS (DirectDraw Surface) is a texture container used in DirectX-based games, real-time 3D applications, and texture authoring workflows. It can store color textures, alpha channels, normal maps, roughness maps, mipmaps, cubemaps, and GPU-oriented block compression such as BC1, BC3, and BC7.

Game engines, DirectX texture tools, NVIDIA or Intel texture utilities, Substance-related workflows, and graphics editors with DDS plug-ins commonly create DDS files. You usually encounter them in game asset folders or when exporting textures intended for fast GPU loading.

A DDS file generally does not contain vertices, faces, a camera, or a complete material setup. A file named albedo.dds is an image used by a model, not the model itself.

What the GLTF format is

glTF is a transmission format for 3D scenes. It can describe meshes, materials, nodes, cameras, animations, and references to image textures. The text-based .gltf format normally uses separate JSON, binary buffer, and image files; .glb packages those resources into one binary file.

glTF is widely supported by browsers, WebGL viewers, game engines, CAD viewers, and 3D applications. It supports physically based materials through the metallic-roughness workflow and usually provides better portability for interactive 3D than a proprietary game texture format.

How to actually convert DDS to GLTF

Use Blender when you have a model that needs the DDS texture. Use DirectXTex's texconv utility to decode DDS into a glTF-compatible image format first.

  1. Identify the DDS texture type. Base-color and emissive textures are normally color data; normal, roughness, metallic, and ambient-occlusion textures are data maps.
  2. Convert the DDS image to PNG with DirectXTex:
    texconv.exe -ft PNG -y -o converted texture.dds
For a directory of textures, run the command for each file or use a shell loop. PNG preserves lossless decoded pixels and supports alpha.
  3. Open Blender and import the source model through File → Import. A model in OBJ, FBX, COLLADA, or another Blender-supported format is required if the DDS is only a texture.
  4. Open the Shading workspace and replace the material's DDS image with the converted PNG. Connect the base-color image to Principled BSDF Base Color, and connect an alpha channel to Alpha when the material uses transparency.
  5. Set base-color and emissive images to the sRGB color space. Set normal, roughness, metallic, and ambient-occlusion images to Non-Color. Connect normal maps through a Normal Map node instead of directly to the shader's Normal input.
  6. Check the material in Material Preview or Rendered view. Confirm texture orientation, transparency mode, normal-map direction, and UV placement before exporting.
  7. Choose File → External Data → Pack Resources if the exported asset must include its images. Then choose File → Export → glTF 2.0.
  8. Select glTF Separate to produce a .gltf file with external resources, or select glTF Binary to produce one .glb file. Enable Include → Selected Objects when only part of the scene should be exported, and enable Materials and the required image export options.

You can also try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. A standalone DDS still cannot provide missing geometry, UV coordinates, or material assignments, so an online conversion can only produce a useful glTF result when the service supports the required model and texture inputs.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Converting DDS to PNG decodes the original GPU compression; it does not restore detail already lost through a lossy DDS format such as BC1 or BC7. Do not repeatedly convert the image through JPEG, because additional compression can damage texture edges and normal-map data.

DDS mipmaps are usually discarded when exported as ordinary PNG images. glTF viewers generate their own mipmaps, but their filtering and level-of-detail behavior may differ from the original game engine.

Normal maps require correct channel interpretation and orientation. A DirectX normal map may use a different green-channel convention from the target viewer; if lighting appears inverted, flip the green channel before export. Cubemaps, texture arrays, and volume textures do not map directly to ordinary glTF 2.0 material images and may require separate 2D textures or a viewer-specific extension.

For a self-contained deliverable, .glb avoids broken relative paths. For editable assets, .gltf with separate images is easier to inspect and replace.
