GLTF is used by web viewers, game engines, AR applications, and other real-time 3D software that cannot open Rhino’s native 3DM files. Converting a Rhino model to GLTF preserves a shareable polygon mesh in a format designed for efficient delivery and rendering.

What the 3DM format is

3DM is the native file format of McNeel Rhinoceros. It stores NURBS curves and surfaces, polygon meshes, solids, layers, object attributes, materials, lights, cameras, and blocks. Rhino, Rhino-based CAD tools, and applications using the OpenNURBS toolkit create or read 3DM files.

3DM is intended for editable CAD and industrial-design work. Its precise NURBS geometry does not transfer directly to real-time formats, so a GLTF export converts surfaces and solids into polygon meshes.

What the GLTF format is

GLTF is a Khronos Group format for transmitting and loading 3D scenes in real-time applications. It can contain meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, node hierarchies, and animation data. .gltf normally uses a JSON scene file plus separate binary and image files; .glb packages the scene, geometry, and textures into one binary file.

GLTF is suited to WebGL viewers, browsers, game engines, AR pipelines, and lightweight model exchange. It generally loads faster than CAD formats because it contains triangulated or otherwise tessellated display geometry rather than exact NURBS surfaces.

How to convert 3DM to GLTF

Using Rhino

  1. Open the .3dm file in Rhino and inspect the model for hidden objects, unwanted layers, and missing textures.
  2. Set the display mesh before exporting. Use File → Properties → Mesh or the document mesh settings, then choose a suitable custom or detailed mesh. Smaller tolerances and higher refinement produce more polygons and better curved-surface appearance.
  3. Select the objects to export if the GLTF should contain only part of the model. Use File → Export Selected; otherwise use File → Export.
  4. Choose glTF or GLB in the file-type list, enter a filename, and confirm the export options.
  5. Choose .glb for a self-contained file. Choose .gltf when the receiving pipeline expects separate JSON, binary, and texture files.
  6. Open the result in the target viewer or application and check scale, face orientation, materials, and texture paths.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the 3DM file, select GLTF or GLB as the output, start the conversion, and download the generated file. Use a desktop workflow instead when the model contains confidential design data or requires control over tessellation and material export.

Quality and compatibility limits

The tessellation settings determine the result: coarse settings reduce file size but make circles and curved surfaces visibly faceted; fine settings improve appearance but can create very large files and slow web loading. Export a test section before converting a large assembly.

GLTF does not preserve Rhino’s full parametric history, editable NURBS surfaces, construction geometry, dimensions, or most CAD-specific object behavior. The exported mesh is suitable for visualization and real-time use, not continued precision modeling.

Texture support depends on the Rhino exporter and the destination application. Keep texture files with a .gltf export, or use .glb to reduce broken relative paths. Verify units after import because GLTF uses meters as its conventional unit, while Rhino documents can use millimeters, inches, or other unit systems.

Complex Rhino materials, procedural shaders, decals, transparency, and custom render settings may be simplified to GLTF’s physically based material model. Objects with flipped normals, non-manifold geometry, or extremely small features can require cleanup in Rhino before export.
