Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A TIF image must be turned into a 3D asset before software such as a WebGL viewer, game engine, or AR application can use it as GLTF. The conversion normally creates a textured plane or terrain from a height map; an ordinary photograph does not contain enough information to generate a complete 3D model automatically.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster image format used for high-resolution textures, scanned artwork, aerial imagery, maps, and grayscale elevation data. Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, GIS applications, scanning software, and 3D packages can create TIF files. In 3D modeling, a TIF usually serves as a color texture or a height map rather than as geometry.

The format supports lossless compression, alpha channels, layered data in some applications, and high bit depths such as 16-bit grayscale. These features preserve source detail, but TIF files are often larger than the PNG or JPEG images commonly packaged with a GLTF asset.

What the GLTF format is

GLTF is a 3D scene format for meshes, materials, cameras, lights, skinning, and animation. It is supported by web viewers, Blender, Godot, Unity, Unreal Engine through plugins or importers, and many AR and visualization tools.

A .gltf file usually references separate .bin geometry data and image textures. A .glb file stores the scene, geometry, and commonly the textures in one binary package. GLB is generally easier to distribute, while separate GLTF files are easier to inspect and edit. GLTF materials use physically based rendering parameters and commonly reference PNG or JPEG textures.

How to actually convert TIF to GLTF

Convert an image into a textured 3D plane with Blender

  1. Install Blender and open a new scene. Delete the default cube with X.
  2. Add a plane through Add → Mesh → Plane. The default plane already has usable UV coordinates.
  3. Open the Shading workspace, create a material, and add an Image Texture node. Choose the TIF with Open, then connect its Color output to the Principled BSDF node's Base Color input.
  4. Connect the image's Alpha output to the material's Alpha input only when the TIF contains transparency. Set the material blend mode to an appropriate transparent option if the target application requires it.
  5. Scale the plane and apply transforms with Object → Apply → Scale. Save the Blender file if the material may need later editing.
  6. Select the plane and choose File → Export → glTF 2.0. Select GLB as the format to embed the mesh and texture in one file, enable Selected Objects if the scene contains unrelated objects, and export as model.glb.

Convert a grayscale TIF height map into terrain

  1. Open the TIF in an image editor and verify that it is grayscale. White areas normally represent greater elevation and black areas lower elevation, although the required direction depends on the source data.
  2. In Blender, add a plane and subdivide it sufficiently through Object → Subdivide. More subdivisions preserve finer height detail but increase polygon count.
  3. Create a texture from the TIF in the Displace modifier, adjust the Strength and Midlevel values, and apply the modifier after checking the terrain shape. Apply scale before displacement so the height value behaves predictably.
  4. Optionally add a second material using the TIF or a separate color image as the terrain surface. Select the terrain and export through File → Export → glTF 2.0 as terrain.glb.

For a no-install conversion attempt, use the free converter on 101convert.com. Its result depends on the conversion supported for the uploaded TIF; a direct raster-to-GLTF operation may create only a basic image-bearing object, not terrain or a detailed 3D reconstruction.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A normal TIF contains pixels, not depth, camera information, or polygon topology. It therefore cannot be converted into a complete volumetric model without additional geometry-generation or photogrammetry processing. Use the plane workflow for decals, labels, photographs, and flat artwork; use the height-map workflow only when brightness represents elevation.

TIFF features such as CMYK color, layers, unusual compression, 16-bit channels, and embedded color profiles may not survive GLTF export or may display incorrectly in real-time viewers. Convert the source to RGB or grayscale PNG when Blender or the target viewer cannot read the TIF correctly. Check the exported GLB in the intended viewer for color, alpha, texture orientation, polygon count, and missing resources.

Keep the texture resolution appropriate for the target device. A 4K or 8K source can make the GLB unnecessarily large, while reducing it too far removes surface detail. GLTF has no universal real-world unit; set the model's scale in Blender and verify it after import into the target application.
