Scanner and print-workflow TIFF files can be too large for an iPhone photo library, Apple sharing workflow, or software that accepts HEIC. Converting a display or sharing copy to HEIC usually reduces storage use, while the original TIFF remains available for editing or print production.
What TIF and TIFF files contain
TIF and TIFF are filename extensions for the Tagged Image File Format, a raster-image container used by scanners, photographers, publishers, print-prepress systems, and image-editing software. TIFF can store uncompressed or compressed pixel data, including lossless LZW and ZIP compression, and may contain RGB, grayscale, CMYK, Lab, 8-bit, 16-bit, or floating-point images.
A TIFF can also carry ICC color profiles, alpha channels, metadata, multiple pages, and application-specific data such as Photoshop layers. These features suit master files and production workflows, but scans and high-resolution images can be very large.
What HEIC files are
HEIC is the common extension for an image in the HEIF container, usually encoded with HEVC/H.265. Apple devices commonly use HEIC for camera photos because it can produce smaller files than JPEG at comparable visual quality.
HEIC can store metadata, transparency, 8-bit or 10-bit images, and image sequences, but application support varies. It is best suited to standard RGB photos intended for viewing, mobile storage, or sharing with software known to support HEIC.
Convert a TIFF to HEIC
For a single file, use the free converter on 101convert.com: upload the .tif or .tiff file, select HEIC as the output format, start conversion, and download the result. Select a high quality setting when available, then inspect the downloaded image at full size before removing the source file.
On macOS, Preview can export many TIFF files directly. Open the image, choose File → Export, select HEIC in the Format menu, choose the quality level, and save the file as image.heic. If HEIC is not offered, macOS or the installed image codec may not support that export path.
For repeatable desktop conversion, ImageMagick requires HEIC/HEIF support through libheif. Check installed support with magick -version, then convert a standard RGB image with:
magick input.tif -quality 90 output.heic
Most HEIC exports use lossy compression. A quality value around 85–95 is a practical range for photographs; higher values increase file size. For a multipage TIFF, explicitly convert its first, zero-based page when only one image is needed:
magick "input.tif[0]" -quality 90 output.heic
Quality and compatibility limits
Keep the TIFF as the master file. TIFF may be lossless and can preserve high bit depth, CMYK data, pages, layers, and specialized metadata that a HEIC export may flatten, discard, or convert. HEIC is not a suitable replacement for a TIFF required for print production, scientific measurement, legal retention, or further high-bit-depth editing.
Standard HEIC viewing is most reliable with RGB images. A CMYK TIFF may need conversion to RGB, and embedded color profiles may be changed or ignored by the encoder or receiving application. A 16-bit TIFF may also be reduced to 8-bit unless the selected encoder and viewer both support a compatible 10-bit HEIC workflow.
Check gradients, shadows, saturated colors, transparency, and page selection after conversion. HEIC support is strong on current Apple platforms, but Windows may require HEIF and HEVC extensions, and older devices, browsers, email clients, print software, and some recipients may not open it. Create a JPEG copy when broad compatibility is required.
