A PostScript-capable printer, publishing workflow, or legacy graphics application may require a TIF image as a PS file. Converting it preserves the raster artwork while packaging it in PostScript page-description syntax for printing or placement.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster image format designed for high-quality storage and exchange. It supports lossless compression, multiple color depths, transparency data, metadata, and sometimes multiple image pages in one file.

Scanners, document-management systems, desktop publishing applications, digital cameras, and graphics editors commonly create TIF files. Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo, Microsoft Office scanning tools, and many scanner utilities can open or export them. TIF is common in archiving and prepress because it can retain more image information than formats intended for web delivery.

What the PS format is

PS is a PostScript file: a text-and-binary page-description document interpreted by printers, RIPs, and applications such as Ghostscript. It describes page size, positioning, colors, fonts, paths, and embedded raster images rather than storing pixels in the same structure as TIF.

PS is useful for print production, older publishing systems, PostScript printers, and workflows that need explicit page geometry. A TIF converted to PS remains a raster image; the conversion does not create editable vector artwork or increase the source resolution.

How to actually convert TIF to PS

Using libtiff tiff2ps

The tiff2ps utility from the libtiff package is the most direct command-line option because it reads TIFF data and writes PostScript.

  1. Install libtiff from your operating system's package manager or obtain the package that provides tiff2ps.
  2. Open a terminal in the folder containing the image.
  3. Run tiff2ps input.tif > output.ps.
  4. Open output.ps in Ghostscript, Adobe Acrobat Distiller, a PostScript viewer, or the target publishing application to check page size and orientation.

For a multipage TIFF, tiff2ps can write the image directories as successive PostScript pages. If the destination accepts only one page, split the TIFF into individual files first with a TIFF-capable editor or ImageMagick.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick can perform the conversion when libtiff tools are unavailable:

magick input.tif output.ps

Use magick identify input.tif to inspect dimensions, color mode, and page count before conversion. On older installations, the executable may be named convert instead of magick.

Converting without installing software

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website by uploading the TIF, selecting PS as the output format, and downloading the generated file. Avoid uploading confidential scans or archival documents to any third-party service unless its data-handling terms meet your requirements.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Resolution: The output cannot contain detail that is absent from the TIF. A 300-dpi source remains effectively 300 dpi when printed at its native physical size.
  • Page dimensions: TIFF resolution tags determine the intended physical size when supported. Verify the resulting PS bounding box because some applications fall back to pixel dimensions or default page sizes.
  • Color: CMYK, RGB, grayscale, and indexed TIF data may be handled differently by the selected PostScript interpreter. Embed or apply the required ICC profile before conversion when color matching matters.
  • Compression: PS may be larger than the original compressed TIF, particularly when the image is encoded for broad interpreter compatibility.
  • Transparency: Basic PostScript has limited transparency support. Transparent TIF areas may be flattened against a background or rendered differently by older interpreters.
  • Compatibility: If the target device supports only an older PostScript level, select that level in the conversion tool or use a compatible RIP; newer constructs may fail on legacy printers.
