Windows applications such as Microsoft Office, CAD tools, and desktop publishing software may require EMF for inserted graphics or clipboard output. Converting a TIF image to EMF provides a Windows-compatible metafile, although raster image data remains raster unless you recreate it as vector artwork.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster graphics format commonly used by scanners, cameras, document-management systems, GIS software, Adobe Photoshop, and GIMP. Files usually use the .tif or .tiff extension.

TIFF supports lossless LZW or ZIP compression, uncompressed storage, high color depth, transparency, multiple pages, and metadata such as resolution and color profiles. Scanned documents and print-quality images frequently arrive as TIF files because the format preserves image detail better than JPEG at the same editing stage.

What the EMF format is

EMF, or Enhanced Metafile, is a Windows graphics format based on GDI drawing commands. Microsoft Office, Windows applications, technical drawing software, and some publishing programs use it for graphics that should scale without the jagged edges associated with directly enlarging a bitmap.

EMF can contain vector paths, text, drawing instructions, and embedded raster images. A TIF-to-EMF conversion normally places the original bitmap inside an EMF container; it does not automatically trace pixels into editable vector shapes.

How to actually convert TIF to EMF

Using the online converter

  1. Open the TIF-to-EMF converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the file with the .tif or .tiff extension.
  3. Select EMF as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .emf file and test it in the program that needs it.

This option requires no installed software and is suitable for a normal single-page image. Check the service's handling policy before uploading confidential scans.

Using LibreOffice Draw

  1. Open LibreOffice Draw and choose File → Open, then select the TIF file, or insert it with Insert → Image.
  2. Set the image's displayed width and height. Preserve the original aspect ratio to prevent distortion.
  3. Choose File → Export, select EMF - Enhanced Metafile as the file type, and save the output.
  4. Open the exported file in the target Windows application and verify its size, colors, and transparency.

If Draw does not expose EMF in the export list on a particular operating system or build, use the online converter or a Windows graphics application with native EMF export. Software that merely renames image.tif to image.emf does not convert the file.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Raster quality is resolution-dependent: the converted EMF will look no sharper than the source TIF. Set the intended physical size and retain sufficient source resolution before exporting.
  • No automatic vectorization occurs: logos, line drawings, and text remain bitmap content unless you trace or redraw them in a vector editor such as Inkscape or LibreOffice Draw.
  • Multi-page TIFFs need separate handling: many converters process only the first page. Convert each page separately when the destination application cannot store multiple images.
  • Color and transparency may change: EMF support varies between applications, especially for CMYK profiles, alpha transparency, layered TIFF data, and 16-bit or floating-point color. Flatten layers and convert to standard RGB when compatibility matters.
  • EMF is mainly a Windows interchange format: newer Windows programs generally provide better rendering than non-Windows applications, which may import EMF with missing fonts, altered clipping, or substituted colors.
