WMF and its use

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is the newer Windows GDI metafile format. Its record structure supports larger coordinate ranges, more drawing operations, improved page-frame information, and Windows printing features beyond those available in standard WMF.
EMF remains primarily a Windows interchange format. It can preserve vector drawing commands when both the source and conversion path support them, which can keep shapes and text scalable for Windows applications and print output. It is not inherently more detailed than WMF, and it is not the preferred format for broad cross-platform sharing; SVG and PDF are generally more portable.

- WMF commonly references installed fonts instead of embedding font outlines. Missing fonts can change text width, line breaks, position, or clipping in the converted file or on the destination computer.
- Thin lines, hatch patterns, clipping, legacy raster operations, and device-dependent coordinates can render differently in modern software or at print size.
- Open the EMF in the target application and test-print it when output accuracy matters.
- Do not rename
file.wmftofile.emf. WMF and EMF have different headers and record formats; changing the extension does not convert the file.
