How to convert eps to emf file

Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and some Windows CAD systems handle EMF graphics more reliably than EPS. Converting printer or design artwork to EMF makes it easier to insert into Windows documents while retaining scalable lines and shapes.

What the EPS format is

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript-based graphics format used for logos, illustrations, diagrams, desktop publishing, and professional print production. An EPS file can contain vector paths, text, clipping paths, embedded raster images, and a low-resolution preview for software that cannot interpret PostScript.

Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, prepress applications, and older publishing systems commonly create EPS files. EPS is suitable for print workflows, but many modern office applications provide limited or inconsistent support for it.

What the EMF format is

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is a Windows graphics format that stores GDI drawing records, including lines, curves, fills, text, and sometimes raster-image data. It is supported by Microsoft Office, Visio, Windows clipboard operations, and many Windows graphics and CAD applications.

EMF normally preserves the scalable portions of an illustration and integrates more reliably than EPS with Windows documents. It is not a replacement for a print-production format: it does not represent every PostScript feature, and support for EMF can vary between applications.

Convert EPS to EMF online

  1. Open the EPS-to-EMF converter on 101convert.com. It can be used free without installing software.
  2. Upload the .eps file and select EMF as the output format if the converter presents a format selector.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .emf file.
  4. Insert the output into the intended Windows application and inspect text, line weights, colors, clipping, and placed images before sharing it.

Convert EPS to EMF with desktop software

Inkscape can provide a visual conversion workflow when its installed version supports EMF export. Install Ghostscript if the EPS contains PostScript that Inkscape cannot import directly, then follow these steps:

  1. Open the EPS file with File → Open.
  2. Review the imported artwork, including fonts, masks, gradients, fills, clipping paths, and embedded images.
  3. Choose File → Save As, select EMF (*.emf), and save the output.
  4. Reopen the EMF in the destination application and verify its appearance at the intended size.

For automated Windows conversions, pstoedit can convert PostScript drawing instructions through its EMF output driver. With pstoedit and Ghostscript installed and available in the system path, a typical command is:

pstoedit -f emf input.eps output.emf

The available EMF driver and command-line behavior depend on the pstoedit build and operating system. If the driver is unavailable, use a vector editor or the online converter instead of treating Ghostscript alone as an EPS-to-EMF converter.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Fonts: If the recipient does not have the original fonts, text substitution can change spacing and line breaks. Convert text to outlines in the source application when preserving the exact lettering matters; outlined text is no longer normally editable as text.
  • Transparency and effects: Transparency, soft shadows, blend modes, pattern fills, overprinting, filters, and complex gradients may be flattened, approximated, or lost. Inspect these elements in the target program.
  • Color: CMYK EPS artwork may be converted to RGB or mapped to Windows display colors. Color-sensitive print work should retain the original CMYK EPS or use an appropriate print PDF.
  • Images: An embedded bitmap remains a bitmap. Converting its container to EMF does not increase its resolution or remove compression artifacts.
  • Page bounds: EPS artwork depends on its bounding box. Unexpected whitespace or cropping can result from an incorrect or unusual bounding box, so check the exported dimensions.
  • Format scope: EMF is primarily intended for Windows software and document insertion. Keep the original EPS, and retain a PDF when the file must be printed or exchanged across platforms.
