How to convert png to emf file

Some Windows applications, Microsoft Office documents, and legacy publishing or CAD workflows accept Enhanced Metafile (EMF) but not PNG. Converting makes the image importable in those environments, but a direct conversion does not turn raster pixels into editable vector artwork.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster format that stores pixels with lossless compression. It supports transparency through an alpha channel and is commonly used for screenshots, interface graphics, diagrams, logos, and web images.

Image editors including GIMP, Photoshop, Affinity Photo, and Krita can create PNG files; operating systems and browsers also produce them. PNG preserves exact pixel detail and transparency, but enlarging it beyond its native resolution causes blur or visible pixels.

What the EMF format is

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is a Windows graphics format made from drawing records for lines, curves, text, fills, clipping, and bitmap data. Microsoft Office and some Windows-based publishing, diagram, and CAD applications use EMF for imported or clipboard graphics.

Vector records in an EMF can scale and print more cleanly than raster pixels. EMF is not exclusively a vector format: it can contain an embedded bitmap, which is the usual result of a direct PNG conversion. File size is not guaranteed to decrease because the result may still contain the complete source image.

How to convert PNG to EMF

Using 101convert:

  1. Open the PNG-to-EMF converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .png file.
  3. Start the conversion and download the resulting .emf file.
  4. Open the file in the intended Windows application and check its dimensions, transparency, and print output.

This method requires no software installation and is available free on 101convert.com. Do not upload confidential images without checking the service's privacy and file-retention terms.

Using desktop graphics software: Use a Windows graphics application that explicitly lists EMF as an export format, such as CorelDRAW or a compatible version of Adobe Illustrator. Open or import the PNG, then choose File → Export or File → Save As, select Enhanced Metafile (*.emf), and save. Menu names and EMF support vary by application and version; GIMP, Photoshop, and Krita do not generally provide native EMF export.

Some versions of Inkscape can export EMF, but availability depends on the installed build and operating system. If Enhanced Metafile is absent from File → Save As or File → Export, use a program with explicit EMF support rather than renaming the extension. Renaming image.png to image.emf leaves the internal file structure as PNG.

When vector tracing is required

A direct conversion preserves the PNG as raster data inside an EMF file; it does not create scalable paths, editable letters, or separate vector shapes. Enlarging that EMF beyond the PNG's original resolution can still produce pixelation.

For actual vector content, open the PNG in Inkscape, choose Path → Trace Bitmap, adjust the tracing mode and threshold, and remove or hide the original bitmap. Export the traced paths to EMF if the installed build provides EMF output. Tracing can change small text, gradients, antialiased edges, thin lines, and transparent areas, so inspect the result at its intended size.

Quality and compatibility limitations

EMF support differs between applications. Alpha transparency, gradients, clipping, font substitution, embedded bitmap records, and complex drawing effects may be ignored or rendered differently. Fonts should be embedded where the software supports it, or converted to outlines when editable text is not required.

Test the converted file in the exact Windows application and workflow that will open, edit, or print it. Keep the original PNG because EMF conversion may alter transparency, colors, dimensions, or image quality.
