Prepress systems, document repositories, and some print workflows require TIFF files even when the source is a PNG. The conversion repackages the raster image as TIFF and may also apply chosen color-mode, profile, or compression settings.

What PNG is

PNG is a lossless raster format used for screenshots, web graphics, interface assets, diagrams, and images with transparent areas. Browsers, screen-capture tools, design applications, and mobile apps commonly create PNG files.

PNG stores grayscale, indexed-color, RGB, and RGBA images, including alpha transparency. It can contain 8-bit or 16-bit channel data and color-management metadata, but it does not store CMYK image data, multipage documents, or editable vector objects; any vector artwork exported to PNG is already pixels.

What TIFF is

TIFF is a tag-based raster format widely used for scanned records, publishing, archival imaging, scientific imaging, and print-production exchange. A TIFF can store grayscale, RGB, CMYK, Lab, alpha channels, ICC profiles, high-bit-depth data, and multiple images or pages.

TIFF supports uncompressed storage and several compression methods. LZW and ZIP/Deflate compression are lossless and are suitable for PNG-derived graphics; PackBits is another lossless option with less effective compression. TIFF is not automatically higher quality than PNG, but its color modes, metadata, multipage capability, and broad support in print and scanning software can meet requirements that PNG does not.

Convert the file

For a one-time conversion, upload the PNG to 101convert.com, select TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting .tif file. This can be done free without installing software.

For local conversion with settings control, use GIMP: open the image, choose File → Export As, enter a name ending in .tif, select TIFF image, and export. Choose LZW or Deflate compression when the receiving application supports it; use uncompressed TIFF only if a specification requires it.

In Adobe Photoshop, open the PNG and use File → Save a Copy or File → Save As when TIFF is available. Select TIFF, then choose LZW or ZIP compression in TIFF Options. If a printer requires CMYK, convert through Edit → Convert to Profile using the ICC profile supplied by that printer before saving.

ImageMagick can batch-convert files from a command line:

On macOS or Linux, convert all PNG files in the current folder with:

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion does not add detail, increase pixel dimensions, recover data, or convert raster artwork back into vectors. A 1200 × 800 PNG remains 1200 × 800 pixels unless it is deliberately resampled.

Lossless TIFF compression does not create JPEG-style artifacts. The resulting TIFF can still be larger than the PNG because TIFF and PNG use different compression schemes, metadata structures, and color representations.

A PNG alpha channel can be written as TIFF transparency, but older print, office, and document systems may ignore it. Flatten transparent areas against the required background color before export when the destination does not support alpha channels.

Some PNG files use indexed color, while a receiving TIFF workflow may require RGB, CMYK, 8-bit, or 16-bit channels. Confirm the required color mode, bit depth, ICC profile, compression, and page structure with the recipient. A single PNG produces one TIFF image; it does not create a multipage document.

Check pixel dimensions and resolution metadata before print output. PPI or DPI metadata affects intended print size, not the amount of image detail. Legacy software may accept only baseline or uncompressed TIFF; if a compressed file fails, retry with LZW or uncompressed TIFF and avoid BigTIFF, layers, or other nonrequired extensions.
