How to convert png to gif file

An older application, web editor, messaging system, or device may accept GIF but reject PNG. Conversion can also provide a small, widely supported file, but GIF's 256-color palette and limited transparency can change the image.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format used for screenshots, interface graphics, diagrams, logos, and artwork with transparent backgrounds. It supports indexed color, grayscale, RGB, and RGBA images, including full alpha transparency and more than 256 colors. Image editors such as GIMP, Photoshop, Krita, Inkscape, and web browsers commonly create or export PNG files.

What the GIF format is

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) stores each frame with a palette of up to 256 colors. It supports simple frame animation, broad legacy compatibility, and one-bit transparency: a pixel is either fully opaque or fully transparent. GIF is suitable for short animations, icons, and flat-color graphics, but is usually unsuitable for photographs, gradients, detailed illustrations, and images with smooth transparent edges.

How to convert the file

Use the built-in online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Open the PNG-to-GIF converter, upload image.png, start the conversion, and download image.gif. Use a desktop method for private images, repeatable color settings, or large batches.

Use ImageMagick

ImageMagick supports command-line and batch conversion. A basic conversion is:

magick image.png image.gif

To reduce the image to a GIF palette with Floyd–Steinberg dithering, use:

magick image.png -colors 256 -dither FloydSteinberg image.gif

Dithering can make gradients appear smoother but adds a deliberate pattern of colored pixels. To convert every PNG in the current directory, run:

magick mogrify -format gif *.png

This writes GIF files beside the originals. Copy the files to a separate output directory first if the source directory must remain unchanged.

To create an animated GIF from numbered frames, use:

magick -delay 10 -loop 0 frame*.png animation.gif

Here, -delay 10 sets 10 hundredths of a second between frames and -loop 0 repeats the animation indefinitely. Check the filename order because shell globbing determines the frame sequence.

Use GIMP

  1. Open the PNG in GIMP.
  2. For explicit palette control, choose Image → Mode → Indexed, select an optimum palette with a maximum of 256 colors, and enable dithering when gradients or photographic detail need smoother transitions.
  3. Choose File → Export As, enter a name ending in .gif, and select Export.
  4. Enable As animation in the export dialog only when separate layers are intended to become animation frames; otherwise leave it disabled.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Conversion quantizes the image to a maximum of 256 palette colors. Gradients can show banding, and photographs can lose color and detail. Dithering may reduce banding but increases patterned noise and can prevent the smallest possible file.
  • PNG's partial transparency is not preserved. GIF has only one transparent palette entry, so semitransparent edges may become jagged or show a fringe matching the matte or background color.
  • A single PNG produces a still GIF. Animation requires multiple PNG frames or layers, plus frame timing and disposal settings.
  • GIF compression is lossless only after palette conversion; it cannot restore colors discarded during quantization. Keep the original PNG for editing and higher-quality exports.
  • GIF is not always smaller than PNG. A simple flat-color image may compress well, while a dithered or detailed image can be similar in size or larger.
  • For flat-color icons, logos, and simple diagrams, GIF may be adequate. PNG is generally better for photographs, full-alpha artwork, gradients, and images with more than 256 important colors.
