What the EPS format is
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a page-description format used for logos, illustrations, diagrams, and print artwork. An EPS can contain vector paths, strokes, fills, clipping paths, text, embedded fonts, and raster images; it is not guaranteed to be entirely vector-based.
Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, desktop-publishing software, and sign-design applications commonly create EPS files. EPS preserves print-oriented appearance well, but its effects, colors, and page layout do not map directly to CAD entities.
What the DXF format is
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is an Autodesk-developed exchange format for CAD geometry. Depending on the DXF version and application, it can store lines, polylines, arcs, circles, splines, layers, blocks, dimensions, and text.
CAD, CAM, laser-cutting, CNC, and plotting software can usually read DXF, including AutoCAD-compatible programs, QCAD, LibreCAD, and many machine-control applications. DXF is appropriate when the destination needs editable geometry rather than a print illustration. It can support layers and unit metadata, but units are not always recorded or interpreted consistently, so the receiving application must be checked.

Convert with Inkscape
- Install Inkscape. On systems where EPS import is unavailable, install Ghostscript as required by the Inkscape build; it provides the PostScript interpreter used to read many EPS files.
- Open the file with File → Open and accept the EPS import settings. Install the source fonts first if the lettering must remain editable or visually accurate.
- Inspect the imported artwork and remove page borders, registration marks, hidden objects, and other elements that should not enter the CAD file. Convert text with Path → Object to Path when the recipient needs outlines instead of font-dependent text.
- Check the original artwork dimensions and set the document units in File → Document Properties. Do not assume that the EPS page boundary represents the intended part size.
- Use File → Save a Copy or File → Save As, then choose an AutoCAD DXF export type such as
Desktop Cutting Plotter R14 DXF, if available in the installed Inkscape version. - In the export options, select the unit system expected by the target program and choose line or polyline output as appropriate. Flatten splines only when the receiving CAD or CAM software cannot handle them.
- Reopen the DXF in a CAD program and inspect its measured dimensions, contours, duplicate segments, curve quality, layers, and origin.
Convert from the command line
pstoedit can convert PostScript-based EPS files through a command line, typically with Ghostscript available:

Driver names and options differ between pstoedit versions. Treat the output as unverified until a CAD application confirms its scale, entity types, and contour closure.
Quality and compatibility limits
- Visual effects are lost: gradients, transparency, brushes, pattern fills, print color data, and some clipping effects do not become equivalent DXF entities.
- Raster content stays raster: an embedded bitmap cannot become editable CAD geometry through format conversion. It must be traced or redrawn separately, and automatic tracing can require cleanup.
- Text depends on fonts: missing fonts can alter spacing and shape. Convert text to paths when exact outlines matter, accepting that the text will no longer be normally editable.
- Strokes are not always cutting outlines: a stroked path may export as a centerline. For cutting, create closed outlines from strokes where necessary and remove overlapping duplicate geometry.
- Scale requires verification: EPS page coordinates and DXF drawing units follow different conventions, and some DXF files omit usable unit metadata. Measure a known dimension after export rather than relying on the displayed size.
- Curves can change form: software may export curves as splines, arcs, or many short line segments. Segmentation can enlarge the file and create rough tool motion; unsupported splines may require controlled flattening.
- DXF compatibility varies: older machine software may accept only specific DXF versions or simple entities such as lines and polylines. Save to the version and entity types specified by the recipient whenever the converter provides that choice.
