What the WMF format is

Windows Metafile (WMF) is a Microsoft graphics format designed for Windows applications. It primarily stores drawing instructions—such as lines, curves, text, fills, and clipping operations—but can also contain embedded bitmap elements.

WMF files are used by legacy Windows graphics and publishing programs and may be found in Microsoft Office documents, clipboard exports, logos, diagrams, technical illustrations, and archived business files. A WMF is intended for display and printing, not for representing a complete CAD model with dependable units, layers, and manufacturing data.

What the DXF format is

Drawing Exchange Format (DXF) is an Autodesk format for exchanging drawing data between CAD applications. AutoCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion, CNC controllers, laser-cutting software, and other engineering tools can import one or more DXF variants.

DXF is suitable when geometry must be edited as CAD data, measured, dimensioned, scaled, or sent to a fabrication workflow. Depending on the DXF version, it can store entities such as lines, polylines, arcs, circles, splines, text, blocks, and layers. It does not automatically preserve every visual feature in a WMF.

How to convert a WMF file to DXF

Using Inkscape

1. Open Inkscape and choose File → Open, then select the .wmf file. Review the import and confirm that the artwork is composed of vector objects rather than only a bitmap.
2. Delete backgrounds, borders, and other objects that should not enter the CAD drawing. Remove or separately handle embedded raster images because they cannot become clean DXF geometry through ordinary export.
3. Check the drawing scale in File → Document Properties. WMF dimensions may represent logical or screen-oriented units rather than millimetres or inches. Compare a known dimension with the source and set the required units before exporting.
4. If the destination does not need editable CAD text, select text and choose Path → Object to Path. This converts letters into outlines and avoids missing-font substitutions, but the result is no longer editable as text.
5. Choose File → Save a Copy or File → Save As, select an AutoCAD DXF exporter such as Desktop Cutting Plotter (AutoCAD DXF R14), and save the file. Choose the DXF version and unit settings supported by the receiving application.
6. Open the exported .dxf in the target CAD or fabrication program. Check the scale, curve quality, layer assignment, text, closed contours, and unwanted duplicate geometry before editing or manufacturing.

Inkscape is useful for straightforward vector artwork, but its DXF exporter is not a full CAD translator. Complex WMF illustrations may require cleanup in a CAD program after export. Commercial vector applications such as CorelDRAW can also open WMF and export DXF, although the exact menu names and available DXF options depend on the version.

Quality and compatibility limits

Text can change appearance or become unavailable when the original font is missing. Verify scale with a known measurement because WMF commonly lacks reliable real-world units and different importers interpret its logical dimensions differently. For CNC or laser cutting, remove duplicate lines, join suitable segments, inspect every contour for gaps and self-intersections, and ensure cut boundaries are closed polylines or otherwise recognized as closed geometry.
