What the WMF format is

WMF (Windows Metafile) is a Windows graphics format that stores drawing instructions such as lines, curves, text, fills, and embedded bitmap data. What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed for the web. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and animation.

WEBP usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality. It is suitable for web graphics, previews, documentation, messaging, and applications that need a browser-friendly bitmap. Unlike WMF, it does not preserve editable vector objects or unlimited scaling.

Open the file in an application that supports WMF, such as Inkscape, then choose File → Export, set the export area and pixel dimensions, select WEBP if available, and export. For a document containing several WMF objects, export each selected object separately or export the complete page, depending on the required result.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The conversion is inherently a vector-to-raster operation. Set the output width and height or rendering density before export; increasing WEBP quality alone cannot restore detail lost by rendering at too few pixels.

Lossy WEBP can create halos around fine text and high-contrast line art. Use lossless WEBP for diagrams, logos, screenshots, and text-heavy graphics; use lossy quality around 80–90 for photographs or illustrations where a smaller file matters more than pixel-perfect edges.

WMF transparency, font substitution, clipping paths, gradients, and embedded raster images may render differently between applications. Convert text to outlines before exporting when exact font appearance matters and the source application supports that operation. Verify the output in the target browser or editor, particularly if transparency or uncommon fonts are used.
