What the KDC format is

KDC is a Kodak Digital Camera RAW format used by several Kodak cameras to store minimally processed sensor data. The file can retain more exposure and color information than a finished JPEG, but it requires RAW-processing software rather than a standard image viewer. You may encounter KDC files from older Kodak digital cameras, camera archives, Adobe Camera Raw workflows, darktable, RawTherapee, and other applications that preserve camera originals.

KDC is not one uniform specification across every Kodak model, so support depends on the camera and the RAW decoder installed in the software. A KDC file may also be accompanied by an embedded preview that looks different from a fully developed image.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is an image format designed for web delivery. It supports lossy compression, lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Lossy WEBP is useful for photographs because it can reduce file size while retaining acceptable visual quality; lossless WEBP is better when exact pixel preservation or transparency matters.

Use WEBP when the destination supports it, such as current web browsers, content-management systems, and many graphics applications. Choose JPEG or PNG instead when a legacy application does not recognize WEBP.

How to convert KDC to WEBP

Using 101convert

1. Open the KDC-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com; conversion is available online without installing software.
2. Upload the .kdc file.
3. Select WEBP as the output format.
4. Set the quality or compression option if the converter provides one. Use a high quality setting for photographs and lossless mode for graphics or images requiring exact pixels.
5. Start the conversion and download the resulting .webp file.

Using desktop RAW software

For more control over exposure and color, open the KDC in darktable or another KDC-compatible RAW processor. Adjust white balance, exposure, highlights, shadows, and color before exporting. In darktable, use lighttable → export, choose WEBP if the installed version exposes that format, set the quality, and export the file.

If the RAW application cannot export WEBP directly, export an intermediate .tif or .png, then convert it with a WEBP-capable image editor or ImageMagick. A typical ImageMagick command is:

Direct commands such as magick photo.kdc output.webp work only when the ImageMagick build includes a decoder capable of reading that particular KDC variant. If the command reports an unsupported format, develop the RAW file in darktable, RawTherapee, or another compatible application first.

Quality and compatibility considerations

Converting KDC directly does not preserve RAW editing flexibility: WEBP contains a rendered image, not the original sensor data. Keep the original KDC files for archival use and treat WEBP as a delivery copy.

For photographic images, start with lossy WEBP quality around 80–90 and inspect fine detail, foliage, text, and gradients. Re-exporting from a previously compressed JPEG can introduce additional artifacts, so develop the KDC directly whenever possible. Use lossless WEBP when compression artifacts are unacceptable, but expect larger files than lossy output.

Color management can change the appearance during export. Convert to sRGB for general web use, embed an ICC profile when the software supports it, and verify the output in the browser or application where it will be displayed.
