Free online KDC to JPG converter

Many browsers, phones, messaging apps, and print services cannot open Kodak RAW files directly. Converting a KDC photograph to JPG creates a smaller, widely supported copy for sharing, editing, or archiving while preserving the original RAW file for future adjustments.

What the KDC format is

KDC is Kodak Digital Camera Raw, a proprietary RAW image format used by some Kodak digital cameras and older Kodak imaging workflows. It stores minimally processed sensor data rather than a finished photograph, so compatible software can often recover more exposure and white-balance detail than from a camera-produced JPG.

KDC is not a universally implemented RAW specification. Support depends on the camera model, file variant, and software version; RawTherapee, darktable, Adobe Camera Raw, some Photoshop versions, ACDSee, and dcraw support selected KDC files.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format supported by operating systems, web browsers, phones, printers, and most image editors. Its lossy compression produces much smaller files than RAW formats, making JPG suitable for websites, messaging, email, and general-purpose printing.

A normal JPG contains a rendered image, usually with 8 bits per color channel. It cannot preserve the full editing flexibility of the original KDC. Export software may copy some EXIF metadata, but RAW-specific data and proprietary maker notes may be omitted.

4. Download the .jpg file and check its orientation, colors, sharpness, and metadata in an image viewer.

Convert with RawTherapee or darktable

1. Install RawTherapee or darktable and open the folder containing the KDC file.
2. Open the image in the RAW editor and adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, and color as required.
3. Choose JPEG as the output format in the export or save controls.
4. Use the sRGB color profile for websites, messaging apps, and general consumer devices.
5. Set JPEG quality around 90–95 for a balance between detail and file size, then export the image.

If the application cannot open the file, try another RAW editor or a version with broader camera support. A failure to open one KDC file does not necessarily mean the file is damaged; the camera model may simply be unsupported.

Command-line conversion

A compatible dcraw build can decode some KDC files to TIFF, after which ImageMagick can create the JPG:

magick image.tiff -quality 92 image.jpg

-w uses the camera's white balance and -T requests TIFF output. The TIFF name can differ between dcraw builds, so check the output directory before running magick. This method is camera-dependent and less convenient for exposure or color corrections than a RAW editor.

Quality and compatibility limits

A KDC must be decoded and rendered before it can become a normal viewable JPG. Make exposure and white-balance corrections while the image is still in the RAW editor; correcting a heavily clipped or underexposed JPG can expose banding, noise, and compression artifacts.

Keep the original KDC as the archival master. For substantial edits, also retain a 16-bit TIFF or the editor's project file. Repeatedly opening and resaving a JPG applies further lossy compression.

Exporting to sRGB gives the most predictable appearance across unmanaged or limited-color-management applications. A wide-gamut profile can produce incorrect-looking colors in software that does not interpret embedded color profiles.
