A publishing, scanning, or archival application may require TIFF instead of the KDC file copied from an older Kodak camera. Converting it creates a widely supported raster image that can be edited, printed, or stored without the compression losses associated with JPEG.
What the KDC format is
KDC is a Kodak camera raw format used by various Kodak EasyShare and professional digital-camera models. It stores sensor measurements and camera metadata rather than a finished bitmap, so software must demosaic the data and apply white balance, exposure, color, and tone settings before displaying the image.
KDC support is model-dependent. An application may open files from one Kodak camera but reject files from another, particularly when its raw decoder is old or lacks that camera's profile. KDC files are most common in archives copied from older cameras or removable media.
What the TIFF format is
TIFF is a tagged raster-image format used in print production, scanning, desktop publishing, scientific imaging, and image archives. It supports grayscale, RGB, and CMYK images, high bit depths, alpha channels, and embedded metadata.
TIFF is not automatically lossless: it can be uncompressed, losslessly compressed with LZW or ZIP, or compressed with other methods, depending on the application. A 16-bit-per-channel TIFF can retain more tonal information from a raw rendering than an 8-bit JPEG, but it is usually much larger. For general sharing, 8-bit sRGB TIFF is more compatible; for further correction, 16-bit RGB TIFF is preferable when the decoder and editor support it.
Convert KDC online
- Open the KDC-to-TIFF converter on 101convert.com.
- Select or drop the
.kdcfile. - Choose TIFF as the output format and start the conversion.
- Download the resulting
.tifor.tifffile. - Open the TIFF and check its dimensions, orientation, color, and visible detail.
This method requires no installed software and is suitable when the conversion settings offered by the converter meet your needs. Do not upload confidential photographs or files covered by retention or privacy restrictions; use a local application for those images.
Convert KDC with a desktop raw processor
RawTherapee, darktable, Adobe Camera Raw, and other raw-processing applications may open particular KDC variants. Compatibility depends on the camera model and the decoder version, so test a representative file before converting an entire archive.
- Install a current desktop application with KDC support.
- Open the KDC file and confirm that the preview is rendered correctly rather than shown as a corrupted or incorrectly colored image.
- Adjust white balance, exposure, highlight recovery, color profile, and noise reduction as required.
- Choose a 16-bit output setting when you need additional editing latitude.
- Use the application's export command, such as File → Export, select TIFF, and choose LZW or ZIP compression if available.
- Embed a recognized color profile, such as sRGB for general compatibility or Adobe RGB for a managed print workflow.
Adobe Photoshop normally opens supported camera raw files through Adobe Camera Raw, but model support varies by version. Photoshop can then save the rendered image through File → Save a Copy or the available TIFF export command. A TIFF exported from Photoshop contains the rendered pixels, not the original sensor data.
Convert KDC from the command line
A dcraw-compatible decoder can create a TIFF without a graphical editor:
dcraw -T -6 -w image.kdc
-T requests TIFF output, -6 requests 16-bit output, and -w uses the camera's recorded white balance. The command normally writes a TIFF beside the source file with the same base name. dcraw is an older tool, and its KDC coverage is not universal; a current LibRaw-based application may support more camera variants. If the decoder reports that the file cannot be identified or decoded, do not treat a generated image as reliable without checking it visually.
Quality and compatibility limits
Raw-to-TIFF conversion is a rendering operation, not a simple change of file extension. The decoder and selected settings determine demosaicing, white balance, color profile, highlight recovery, noise reduction, sharpening, and tonal curve, so two applications can produce different TIFFs from the same KDC.
Keep the original KDC files as the camera-source archive. TIFF preserves the exported pixels and some metadata, but it does not preserve every raw-processing option or allow the original sensor measurements to be recovered after export.
Check the converted file in the software that will use it. Older programs may have limited support for 16-bit color, embedded profiles, alpha channels, compression types, or large TIFF dimensions. Use uncompressed TIFF when compatibility is more important than storage space, and use LZW or ZIP when the receiving application supports those lossless options.
